that's condescending

Not in the slightest.

It is how history is recorded.

The Roman invasion of Britain was launched from Gaul, using Gallic slaves, on Gallic ships built from Gallic trees and they were equipped with weapons forged in Gaul.

History still records it as the Roman invasion of Britain.

The Norman conquest of England wasn't over in a single battle in 1066, it took decades and decades more to conquer and enslave Wales and decades more to cross over to Ireland. By the time of the invasion of Ireland, the Normans still weren't even interbreeding with the English.

In your view of how history should be recorded (not supported by any historian), there are no empires, no empire builders and just a bunch of city states fighting each other.

There was no British Empire, the independence of India from the non existent British Empire never happened because the British had been in India for generations therefore they were now Indian.

Is it starting to sound ridiculous yet?

Let me tell you something: I've had enough of Irish Americans who haven't been back to their country in twenty or thirty years come up to me and talk about the resistance, the revolution back home; and the glory of the revolution, and the glory of dying for the revolution. f**k the revolution! They don't talk about the glory of killing for the revolution. What's the glory of taking a man from his bed and gunning him down in front of his wife and his children? Where's the glory in that? Where's the glory of bombing a Remembrance Day parade of old-age-pensioners, their medals taken out and polished up for the day? Where's the glory in that? To leave them dying, or crippled for life, or dead, under the rubble of the revolution that the majority of the people in my country don't want. No more! Sing No more!

A United Ireland in the United Kingdom makes more sense if you're going on a strictly economic argument.

Not my view of history. Also does not address the reason your comment was condescending, which was that it suggested I have never read a history book. Perhaps that was not your intent.
