I mean, I'm willing to change my point of view on things if someone points out a more rational view of something. My views aren't set in stone. Gun rights are a common since issue, but then again so are most of the issues once you remove all these think tank labels.

Exactly, if you're able to step back and say "Ok, that was the wrong thing to do" and not make that mistake again, you're ahead of the game. Don't let your emotions cloud your judgement, that's how the other side fights.

Yeah... But I don't really take a side though. I usually end up standing alone. Most people don't care enough about the real truth.

Private Gun ownership was effectively totally illegal during the British rule of Ireland.
Ireland existed under British rule for over 700 years.
At the beginning of that occupation the standard of military technology [halberds etc..] was fairly comparable, however discipline and training differed as did the cultural approach to conflict. British and mercenary troops won the day.
By the end of the occupation several hundred years of rebellion had continued unstopped while the British government poured lives and resources into quashing the 'unruly Irish'.
Ireland secured it's independence through politics and guerrilla warfare, men with little more than hunting weapons and the odd Lewis gun fought against overwhelming British force, the resistance showed willing, their politics showed spirit and wisdom and it was the combination of the two that earned them their independence.
Ireland has no laws allowing for gun hoarding, their laws pertaining to the licensing of the owner and the types of weapons available are similar to ours.
Most contemporary revolutions that are not military coups are in actual fact only successful in the long term because of the minimisation of the use of the gun.

As for the insults and tone of arrogance? well there is no need for any of it.
My closing comment on this thread is to each their own, however what I see online of attitudes on the part of US citizens bothers me, I wonder if this was the early thirties, who would it be making all the aggressive and abusive comments?

An old Sailor I once met told me an interesting little story...

'I was on the ships, It must have been '36 or '37 and we had two days in Rotterdam.
Well me and the lads, well several of us that were mates, we went into the city to get on the piss [binge drink on beer].
We were in a wee bar not far back off the waterfront and had gotten to drinking with a couple of local wharfies [stevedores/watersiders] and some German chap, someone mentioned Spain, the rights and wrongs of events there...
Well this German chap, very political he was, a fascist, well he started telling us all about it, how the future was in Nazism, Fascism and all else showed weakness, a mans destiny must be seized....
Well the Dutch boys looked at each other and then us and one of them told him to shut up, then the other, then each of us...'

I paraphrase, but do you get my point?
Perhaps there are some fundamental things that each culture possess and some fundamental flaws, strict faith in or adherence to anything once it comes under the eye of the external observer is at best foolhardy as is a lack of respect for the foundations on which you stand.
We live in a rapidly condensing world, our societies overlap and intrude into each others spaces with greater intensity and frequency and if we wish to pursue quality lives we need to be adaptive. I don't think assumed threat or belligerence is necessarily going to help me progress toward that Snake321 has approached this forum thread with that attitude and look where it has gone, abuse threats, lets all actually remember,

A/ we are all human beings in here
B/ have a sense of humour
C/ there for the greater good go I

Too true, and when it's you against the world, well, the world wins most of the time. It's got numbers, if nothing else.

Dude you are just a stupid little fa***t liberal f****. Your too ignorant to fathom ideas other than your own, it's f***ing insulting that your making accusations against me because I support a right which is there to protect the ****CITIZENS**** from oppression.

First of all, it was a joke, in case you didn't see the emoticon, did you? I wasn't actually accusing you of being a gangster, I believe making fun of you would be a better way to put it, due to your outburst reactions and inmature behaviour of yours when it comes to debating this, people would lose respect for you, dude. You should control yourself and think better, and not calling someone who doesn't share your point of view a ret*d as you have been doing, apparently.

The question I make myself now is, would I trust someone who has an emotional reaction like that to own a gun? Would it be totally safe for others and for himself?

Yes, well, snake was hardly the only one who was arrogant and threatening, and his posts seem mild compared to some... annyway the best way to hold any discussion is with civility and without rancor, so I promise to hold my temper if everyone else promises to hold their own.

At any rate, Fare thee well *Virtual handshake*.

One swallow does not make a summer, and one loss of temper does not make an unstable person; and, in addition to that, it's quite easy to go to extremes on the internet in ways you would not go to in real life, so unless you know snake in real life, I would not suggest making any judgement calls just yet.

Well you were still in the wrong for "making fun of me". I've actually offered logical points that you haven't even made an attempt to counter. Nor has the_chosen_one, in fact he blatantly says he don't care about any of my points. That's like sticking his fingers in his ears and going "lalalalalalalala". I'm sorry but his arguments have lost any valid (assuming there was one to begin with, which really there wasn't). Ironically, YOUR calling ME immature, when I'm dealing with the facts, and your running away from them. Dealing with facts, or running from facts, which sounds more like a responsible adult?
Yeah I temporarily lost my cool with you, try arguing logic against people who think purely on blind emotions, to hundreds of people a day, everywhere you go, when people are too ignorant and too set in their views to come to reasonable conclusions. And you wonder why the world is in the state that it's in?
Your problem is your too afraid to be an individual, you'll believe anything just to follow the rest of the liberals, without questioning any of their stand points. Any points or facts that go against your ideology, you turn your head and look the other way, because 1. You are a lazy thinker, and 2. Acknowledging facts or points that go against liberal ideology means you might be slipping out of the liberal mold, and then you'll be alone. Guess what? I am alone, it's better here than in some delusional fantasy that you use to escape reality. Because reality hits harder when you hide from it, believe me.
Just because I lost my cool and threw a blow doesn't mean I'm gonna go shoot someone. The only times I'd ever shoot someone would be in self defense, ie someone is breaking in my house or in defense of my civil rights should the day come when the government turns (which is looking very likely).

You're right, and I am not actually judging him in that way, I am not saying he, especifically, will go shooting people he gets upset with. I believe he may not be like that at all.

But there is a point I am making in general terms, with people in general, if one person has a bad temper would that be trusted enough to make a good judgement when carrying a gun? I wouldn't trust such person actually. There have been cases when someone has been shot because of that. As I said, regular people having easy access to guns, that is a dangerous thing, because a lot of people are irresponsable and impulsive with bad judgement. Taking justice into your own hands, doesn't sound right. A part from what message society is telling children with that.

I don't consider myself liberal actually, neither conservative, I don't label myself to anything really, I might as well have some of both things.

I didn't know that would offend you greatly, and as it seems it did, then I apologyze.

I know you were not the only one, The_Chosen_One was going strong on his view as well, although at first it wasn't aimed to anyone on here, as iamnotaparakeet though he was telling everyone to kill themselves, lol. So it didn't seem he wasn't insulting anyone here personally. It seemed to me you took it personal and then things were starting to get ugly, including him behaving the same way, I might be wrong though.

Now I want this to end somehow, I don't like this hostility and I don't like this to end just like that either, so I think this differences in views shouldn't be a reason to fight and go insulting and make enemies, I would like everybody to be friendly even if we don't share the same views. So I ask you to end this peacefully with no hard feelings and stuff like that. And I will and I have to respect your opinions.

First of all, what part of humanity mave you met personally, .0000001%? How can you presume to make negative judgements on all people, on such a basis?

Second of all, who are these 'regular' people you keep referring to? Are the non-regular people somehow more qualified to have weapons? That sounds like elitism to me.

Finally, I wouldn't trust such a person either, which is why I have a gun myself, Legally, while this hypothetcal person may have obtained theirs illegally, which it has been, is, and in all likelihood will remain, easy to do. Furthermore, self-defence is not taking justice into your own hands, it is defending yourself, which you have every right to do.

I have a question for you; If someone broke into your home, intending to harm you, what would you, personally, do?

Where will it end? Anyone who thinks that owning a weapon makes them safer should go and visit their nearest mental hospital and book themselves in for an extended stay, because it's the THREAT of these weapons that causes the problem. The only ones that should bear arms are the armed forces and the police, and even the police go too f*cking far. It seems to me that it all hails back to the Wild West days of Jesse James and Billy the Kid. Well, it's 2007 now and those days of 'shoot first and ask questions later' have gone. If Britain and Australia can do without the right to bear arms, then surely you could join the rest of us in the 21st century as well.

How do you propose that Americans keep Illegal guns from coming across the Mexican border? Or how do you keep them from getting smuggled through ports for that matter?

Why, to defend yourself? Not that easy, What if you are defending yourself against someone who was not attacking you after all, being that a mistake of yours. What if you get really angry at someone, hmmm, using your gun to shoot that person would be a good temptation, would you resist it? How about people with anger management problems?

I don't know if you are a parent, but if you were a parent, would you feel safe having a gun in the house with kids around?

Most of the people are not careful enough or responsable enough on their judgements and behaviour, much less when being under emotional stress.

Acidental gun deaths are at an all time low. Your kids are 50 times more likely to get killed by your backyard swimming pool than your gun.
