Well...there are two reasons people will leave the church. One: Christians and others authentically seeking God and genuine worship aren't going to be attracted to any church where they won't find either or both. Two: The church actually teaches Truth and calls people to repentance. If the world does not want to admit that it needs repentance, then the gospel message is unattractive by default. Smaller churches seem to have people who are stronger in faith per capita than larger churches. I attended a church for several years where more believers were leaving than coming over the last few years, even before the Biden Flu outbreak. I'll catch their services on YouTube sometime. They are a sad people.

Perhaps it was decided that there was enough for folks to misinterpret in there already. If in fact that was the case, I'd have to say, good call.

Some of the more caricature-like descriptions may go too far, but the essence of the observations seems sensible enough. For example, I wouldn't agree 100% with the caricature of OT God as a cosmic Saddam Hussein, but I can see what it's driving at. Though I guess it's not that relevent to the topic - the standard of the deity's supposed behaviour does look odious to me at times, but not particularly absurd. What does seem absurd is the idea that the human race (and not its creator) is responsible for not living up to that creator's wishes, and the idea that the creator then had to make a sacrifice so that he could forgive us, which is the wrong way round, if sacrifice can truly ever be said to be the right way round.

This is not as absurd as it might first appear, In the old testament God said "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.". This would suggest two things, firstly we are as flawed as god is, secondly there's more than one god.

Alien-god theory again....

There is no need to feel anything towards property regardless of whether that property possesses personality or not. Animals are property, too, and as such have no consistently enforceable rights (sorry, PETA). The only value they have is what we give them. If we see no purpose to keep them alive, we are under no obligation to. Hot lead is a highly effective tool to bringing a quick, merciful end to either a dying animal or a dangerous one. In terms of ownership, they have no real, objective status any more or less than a car or any other possession. God is under no obligation to regard us as anything more than a machine, a tool, or an inanimate object. Christians feel it is not our place to pretend that we mean any more to God than that. If God chooses to destroy us without shedding a single tear, how we feel about it isn't going to matter one way or another. If God chooses to die so we can have a second chance at reconciliation, God is powerful enough to do that.

And if God feels we are worth dying for, it would better for us to pause long enough for him tell us that. Oh, wait...

Rho, I would NOT like to be your pet dog, if you feel animals are merely property and have no feelings. They are just as sentient as you or I. It's true some animals have higher status than others, and many are used for food. Chickens and pigs are among the smartest of creatures. I am not currently a vegetarian but have been through vegetarian stages, as has my evangelical sister. She truly cares about all God's creatures. I was once shopping in the supermarket about to choose a chicken when I was overcome by the sight of the blood in the bag and had tears in my eyes as I put it back in the fridge and chose a non-meat option for my meal.

We get to choose how we treat animals and most of us despise seeing animal abuse or cruelty, although we can understand that unfortunately many animals need be killed for food. Animals have feelings and are not supposed to suffer needlessly. Animals are much better behaved than most humans, and usually only attack us for food or in self defence, unlike us humans.

People generally love their pets and do not see them as property. Even farm animals deserve respect. Dr Temple Grandin had empathy for cattle and felt their fear, which is why she specially designed devices that made life more comfortable for them, while realising at the same time that the meat trade isn't something we can simply do away with.

Let's imagine, with this mindset common among people, a "prophet" emerges and says that it's justified to do <something evil, let's say some ethnic cleansing or nuking a whole nation> because the "prophet" is the voice of God and God's actions are always justified as he "owns" the humanity.

But would that be within the nature and character of God? Biblical prophets were required to have confirmed prophecies. It would not be difficult to make a prophecy that could be confirmed if God really is talking to the prophet. God never called for ethnic cleansing in the OT, so it doesn't make sense that God would somehow backtrack and renege on his offer of grace to all people. The point is not that God WANTS to destroy his creation. The point is that creation is God's to destroy if he wants to.

I think that one major effect Jesus had on the world is that restoring grace and forgiveness to our faith has actually resulted in human being taking MORE responsibility for war and destruction. Hitler had near total devotion from every German and the whole nation was committed to the Aryan cause. It's not unlike Sodom whose evil was complete to the point God didn't see fit to spare anyone. If God had intervened in Germany directly as he had in Sodom, no one who had been alive in Germany at that time would have even survived. What would people have preferred knowing the end had come? To be completely wiped out by God, or for other human beings to occupy Germany, help rebuild, and resist the Soviets? The horror of nuclear war in Japan served to inform all Japanese people that they could not win the war, and was justified in that more people survived to rebuild Japan and end further cost in human lives to both sides. With the entire nation of Japan behind fighting the west to the last man, had God intervened in the same way, no one in Japan would have survived. I think that makes a bold statement to say that nuclear weapons are preferred to what God might dish out. It's almost like saying millions of soldiers would rather put their lives on the line to protect their nations' interest if that's what it takes to keep God from showing up, but at the same time no nation was ever denied its right to exist.

Of course...peace is always better.
If God never commanded genocide in OT, how do you interpret e.g. Deuteronomy 20:16-18? And, more importantly, how to prevent someone from using such passages to try to justify doing evil things today?

Anyway, apart from God's nature, that would be very much in nature of people claiming to be the voice of God.

How to objectively and beyond doubt "confirm" a prophet? Or, more importantly (Popper's philosophy of science never really leaves me ;) ): How to objectively and beyond doubt debunk a false prophet?

Quote Angel Rho "Hitler had near total devotion from every German and the whole nation was committed to the Aryan cause."

This is a falsehood. Hitler had the support of about a third of the German people but consolidated his position as Chancellor by all devious means after President von Hindenburg died. Remember, it became a dictatorship and many opponents of Nazism were deported or disposed of. It became increasingly difficult for the average German to openly defy Hitler.

Deuteronomy 20 doesn’t mention genocide. I don’t recall seeing the word genocide ever mentioned.

Exodus 23:27-32 is another passage that debunks the false idea of Biblical genocide. If God is displacing the Seven Nations, how is it genocide if there are survivors? Deuteronomy 20 only says no survivors may be left among the cities. No mention is made regarding the countryside, travelers beyond the borders, or refugees that escape to surrounding countries. The liberation from the seven nations was not meant to be accomplished right away, but was to be accomplished over time. The stated reason for this was to keep the land from being overrun by wild animals. The real reason was to give the seven nations time to leave on their own. Wiping out the inhabitants of the cities was not the eradication of an ethnic group for the sake of eradicating an ethnic group. It was a measure taken specifically against resistance. Genocide, by contrast, doesn’t allow for the possibility of survival.

The commands against the seven nations were very specific to the liberation war. That command was given to no one else but the Israelites and only applied to that war or series of wars. It cannot be applied to Christians, American colonists against Indians, World War II, or anything else, not really even present-day Jews in contemporary Israel. That doesn’t mean war can’t be justified. But when any other war must be waged, Israel is required to make an initial offer of peace. If peace is rejected, Israel is only commanded to kill combatants. There is no way Deuteronomy can excuse modern genocide.

To be clear: it is LOGICALLY possible to justify modern genocide, meaning it is conceivable that, say, you have an ethnic group that has been completely overrun by a zombie virus infection and will destroy humanity if allowed to live. Silly idea, I know, but it is a logically possible idea. But it is not a possibility explored in any Biblical fcontext. A nation may justify genocide to itself. Whether that justification actually is evil is a whole other beast and must be considered apart from Biblical commands. What’s stopping, say, the Darwinist principle of survival of the fittest from being used to justify genocide if an ethnic group displays genetic traits another group considers inferior? Why allow them to live when that means unfit people are competing for the same resources? Isn’t that just a waste? Or if you consider genocide evil when Darwinism suggests certain genetic traits deserve extinction, does that make teaching evolution evil? If you go around demonizing everything that could possibly be evil then all of humanity would go extinct because every animal and blade of grass and all fruit and all things edible are sacred to someone.

Prophets are objectively confirmed when they make a prophecy that is confirmed to be true. It has to be a specific prediction, and the predicted event must happen with a certain time frame. Else they reveal things to be true that they couldn’t possibly have known unless God revealed it to them. False prophets would be unable to do that, same as Pharaoh’s magicians were ultimately proven false.

"The other day I saw my neighbor standing next to his car talking on the phone while it was warming up. The keys were already in the ignition, so I just snuck up from behind and jumped in the car and drove away with it."

As you can see, the word "theft" never appeared anywhere in this passage. Therefore clearly no theft took place.

"The Holocaust clearly was not an ethnic cleansing, since so many Jews survived that the UN created an entire new country for them to live in. And because it doesn't meet my narrow definition of what a genocide is, there is nothing evil about the mass murder of millions of people."

Great logic. Rho!

This. The U.N. definition of genocide says that the group can be killed in whole or in part. So the existence of survivors doesn't stop it from being a genocide, by definition.

Let's consider 'time'...and space too, I suppose. It would be helpful to imagine or draw Cartesian coordinates....an x-axis and a y-axis. Here's how I see it: The x-axis represents time. Or, more precisely, time through space. Starting at (0,0) and heading to the right (positive numbers) is the future. Start at (0,0) and move to the left, we find the past. The point (0,0) then, would be Now. Without getting into the math because topology can be as confusing as talking to an NT, we can keep dividing units of time as we tend toward (0,0) from either direction, and that unit shall tend toward zero, but never really reach it. One second cut in half is a half second, half of that is a quarter of a second, etc. God, in my opinion, is at true (0,0) - a place beyond time, or a place that transcends time. Except I can't actually use the word 'place' because that implies 'matter' and matter would not exist either. Einstein proved that matter cannot exist where time does not exist.

So the short answer (for me) is that if you want to find God - be here NOW.

Interesting thought. But it seems that you are making the concept of God so nebulous that anyone could point to anything and label it "God". Nothing here points to a Christian God who sacrificed his son.

Where was the UN during the war against the seven nations?

Your point, please? They never had such things as the UN those days, toothless as they so often are...
