You could say it's ephebophilia more than paedophilia. Also realise that life expectancy would have been much lower then, and people in Ancient Greece would not be cosseted like many are today.

The Athenians were not habitual pedophiles. The Greek intelligentsia had no problems with intimate relations between young men (already past what we call adolescence) and older men. That is another thing entirely. It was indulged in by both parties who know what the choices were.

Athenians of the era considered 12 yr old boys fair game. There is plenty of documentation for this. They considered a male to be a man when he could grow a full beard (meaning the equivalent of an adult nowadays not shaving for 3 months or so). Considering the caucasian Mediterranean populations do grow facial hair near age 14~16 its rather safe to assume back in those days it would have been similar.

As I said though - it doesn't sound like they are 'proper' paedophiles. Spain has 13 as its age of consent (as long as the relationship isn't abusive and the parents don't complain), even today.
