People against freedom of speech and opinion more now.
Think of how a parent has tolerated their kid's messy room but they have still told them to clean it. The kid never complies so after five times the parent finally grounds their kid for not cleaning their room. Now does that mean the parent has all of a sudden gotten too sensitive for messy bedrooms?
I think far too many people have tolerated the intolerance for too long. They didn't all of a sudden become too sensitive.

Well, how does it feel when someone keeps making comments that hit where you're sensitive and tries to play it off like it shouldn't bother you because they didn't mean anything (and yet the keep doing it despite you repeating yourself)?
Whether or not some uninvolved third-party insists that it shouldn't be hurtful it is and it's compounded by being told over and over again to just get over it, that your reaction is unreasonable and invalid and you shouldn't have it.

Just a reminder: under international law, an occupying power has no right of self-defense, and those who are occupied have the right and duty to liberate themselves by any means possible.

I'm just wondering, it begs the question of who can decide what is hurtful or not? Surely, even if some things are hurtful or offensive expressions, I'd still be concerned if we need to have a central arbiter of deciding what is "approved" or not.
I had an ex who was always joking around and my feelings didn't matter to him. He was just joking after all and I had to toughen up because this us who he is. I would be having a serious discussion and he would be joking around. I would take him seriously and he would go "I was just joking" and I always felt disrespected. This was not humor he was doing and he was not telling jokes or making a pun joke. Then he would get mad whenever I took him seriously and believed that part of him. "Damn, I was just joking" he would say.
But when I met my husband, there were times when I would get upset with his jokes because I felt disrespected. When I talk about my feelings and he is joking, I get very upset because I feel he isn't taking this seriously and you know what he always did? Apologize and stop. My husband had to learn when he can joke with me and when it's not the good time for it. Trial and error it was. But my ex didn't care.

Are you suggesting that people should need approval to feel slighted or insulted because they're incapable of knowing for themselves what they find insulting and offensive?

Agreed.
There are implicit rulz regarding freedom of speech.
There is no freedom to incite a person into murder/suicide, as an example.
Regardless of what they call themselves.
Local juristictions vary, and the same ones vary over time, in how much tolerance they have for brothels masquerading as message parlors.
Not in Australia or New Zealand.
I was speaking in general, and about the US, for the benefit of "the street wisdom impaired". Was afraid that some nit picker was gonna come along.
OK. Nit pick, but be clear please.
Not in Australia/NZ?
Which "not" do you mean?
Do you mean that brothels are not illegal? Or that they are illegal, and that they are not ever tolerated regardless of what they call themselves ? Or that they do not call themselves massage parlors? Or what?
Sex parlours are legal in all parts of Australia.
And:
Nevada is the only state in America where sex work is not illegal. There was no state law on prostitution in Nevada until 1971, when a section of the Nevada Revised Statutes effectively legalized prostitution in counties with a population of under 400,000.[38]

Yup.
So many sensitive people, these days.
It is a form of control.
What annoys me is that the Australian culture is more broad-minded than the American. We were known as "Larrakins"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larrikin
So many wowsers, these days.
In Australia, it is a derogatory word denoting a person who saps all the fun out of any given situation. Derived from the temperance movement in Australia and New Zealand at the turn of the C20th, when it was hurled as an accusation towards conservative teetotallers who were too prim and proper to relax and socialise, it has become a more generic term that can be assigned to any straight bore lacking a sense of humour, especially petty bureaucrats and Aussies politicians.
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=wowser
I don't see it as a double standard because women are more likely to be a victim of sexual assault.
There are rare women who are broad-minded and can joke around like that.
When you find one, treasure her.
It depends on the woman.
Test the waters and allow them to define the boundaries.
It ain't rocket surgery.
BTW, you are really good at this being "reasonable and enquiring" thing you got going.
I wasn't expecting it to last.
The problem in America is that Christianity has such a grip on the country.
"The Bible Belt", is infamous.
Australia is more secular and broad-minded/down-to-earth.
And we aren't into the mindless dogma, that used to be the case, that our grandparents were into.
I find American puritanicalism amusing, but also constricting, and sometimes, down right annoying.
And, yes, the puritanical mindset is a nonsense, when you consider sex is simply a natural biological function.
It is disgusting how some people are penalised because they don't have qualities which attract the sort of person they want to be with.
Evolution has created a situation where some people can't fulfil their natural urges/instincts, and that cause a tremendous amount of emotional pain.
It is like denying someone food and drink.
The system is brutal. It is an abomination. And to add insult to injury, you have sanctimonious individuals dictating your personal life.
It's a fracking japes.
And the inmates have control of the asylum.
"It's a madhouse, I tell ya!"
