Maybe, but atheism will not end war.

I can guarantee that as long as there are resource conflicts between ethnic or political groups and people continue to function the way they always have, there will be war.

Now, if, for example, negative attitudes towards contraception were lifted, that might reduce war. But that's not the same as abolishing religion period.

contraceptives wouldn't reduce war but it'd certainly reduce the spread of HIV and other STD's in places like africa.

if populations were to get under control, resources would be better...so i guess that'd be an indirect long-term effect of contraceptives. food prices would most likely stabilize then shrink.

Yes, that's my point.

Religion does not inherently cause people to behave in irrational and destructive ways. The secular humanist / believer debate is poorly framed.

The real concern should be with irrational behavior. Non-believers are also prone to things like confirmation biases, greed, post hoc fallacies, xenophobia, etc.

If the goal of atheism is to abolish religion.. both Buddha.. and Jesus.. were atheists too.. it seems.

----

Kutadan ta said:
"I am told that thou teachest the law, yet thou tearest down religion.

Thy disciples despise rites and abandon immolation, but reverence for the gods can be shown only by sacrifices. The very nature of religion consists in worship and sacrifice."

Said the Buddha: "Greater than the immolation of bullocks is the sacrifice of self. He who offers to the gods his evil desires will see the uselessness of slaughtering animals at the altar. Blood has no cleansing power, but the eradication of desire will make the heart pure.

Better than worshipping gods is obedience to the laws of righteousness."

Identity and Non Identity [4]

-----

Then.. Jesus (who also taught law).. tearing down religion..

-----

“As he was going out of the temple one of his disciples said to him: "Teacher, see! what sort of stones and what sort of buildings!"”

However, Jesus said to him: "Do you behold these great buildings? By no means will a stone be left here upon a stone and not be thrown down."

Mark 13:2

-----

Bearing this in mind..

Atheists can sleep soundly in their beds tonight..

With a strong conviction..

That God is on their side.. ;-)

true dat

one irrationality i don't get...wanting to be the head of a country but you're making off-color jokes like "bomb iran" when we're in a sensitive position right now with them?

or maybe that's simply an appeal toward irrationality.

I'll bet he's posturing.

It seems 'armed' conflict has become more posturing and less action over the years, as the stakes increased.

For now...

No need to say sorry.. I like the pic..:-)

It goes well with this verse too..

Verse number 666....

The number of the beast........=:-0

-----

"There is a sound of uproar out of the city, a sound out of the temple! It is the sound of God repaying what is deserved to his ENEMIES."

Isaiah 6:66

-

"He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number..

His number is 666"

Book of Revelation 13:16

it doesn't take a theist to see that if there were a god, that'd be a direct affront to it.

I simply reposted something someone else intended to post

Don't necessarily agree with it

Of course

The toys involved are getting very complex.

Like I've said before, expect a new arms race sometime within the next ten years.

OK, I was thinking of removing the quote author because I had seen the url on a previous page, but I wasn't sure if it was a code fix or something intended for the conversation.
