A question about Judaism and Israel
That's always something I've wondered about: how much does the mandatory service influence the people's complacency about their government? I mean I know there are obviously people who protest against the cruelties and inhumanities within Israel..but Netanyahu won and formed his coalition government with third place finisher Lieberman. Weird....Lieberman scares the hell out of me. About as much as Palin does.

Israel is like Frankenstein's Monster, stitched together from different parts and energised with life in one shot... start with the original Jews (5% of the population in 1920 who were anti-Zionist), then the Azhkhenazis who entered under British protection and then after World War II, and then add the Middle Easterners who showed up in 1949-51 or so, doubling the population. Another 20% was added in the early 1990s or so of people fleeing shock therapy in the ex-USSR... an organ transplant, one could say, to this Frankenstein Monster.
Moshe Dayan said that what turns these people into Israelis is the army - the army is the device to turn these people into Israelis. Moshe Sharett pointed out that according to Dayan, this army had to be in a state of alert and a state of war maintained to properly mix these people to become one... that peace would cause the state's internal contradictions to manifest, perhaps causing the country to fall apart.
20% of the population are Arabs who are the descendants of those who managed to stay behind. Most don't serve in the military and until 1965 were under military rule. Many live in "unrecognised villages", the Bedouin who do serve in the army... despite this loyalty their crops in the Negev desert are sprayed with herbicide by those who don't want the desert to bloom... they are trying to knock down their villages and towns and like to set up hazardous waste dumps in the middle of these towns at times.

None at all
if anything the service makes u more aware of how everything is just a big load of cr**p
i served in a combat unit and took part in some really fierce fighting(against a real army which is nothing like the fighting of today)
and u must not believe the image the IDF is trying to project as my service was very much M*A*S*H like
anarchy,cynicism,drugs... everything goes
we laughed at and hated just anyone
Catch 22 was our bible
u have to know Israel youth to get how different they are from what u read in the news
{
the same is true about the Iranian youth
at least that what i'v been told
}
Lieberman,much like Palin,is just a clown,most ppl her knows that,he is nothing and has already broke most of his promises to his voters
he will disappear very quickly
hopefully to the big house as police have already more the enough to lock him up
the man is corrupted criminal
like most right wing patriots
