I used to live in Fort Lauderdale, and I assure you that it (and Miami) are part of peninsular Florida.

You think of Miami as an Hispanic area, but most of the residents are Northeners.

Southern Florida (Miami area) is composed largely of Cuban expats and New York Jews. It's much more cosmopolitan than the panhandle or Central Florida and really is not at all part of the American South.

Miami Beach used to be the southernmost northern city. Now it is the westernmost Cuban city.

The protest doesn't seem to be a big one - it's easy to put up a sign, wait for the local looney to complain, and then make an article painting all the local Christians as nuts. If there was some political action or something against it, then that's a different story.

Good sign though, need more of them!

Henriksson, your article doesn't say where in Florida this happened. As we've been saying, Florida is strange, with vast differences between areas. If this happened in Miami, then it is news. If it happened in the panhandle, then it's the norm. The Florida Panhandle is considered the deepest part of the "Deep South."

hehe... to be honest, I couldn't care less about whether or not I lived in Sweden. I'm sure it's a great country to live in (you know, with everybody actually having health care and all that), but I specifically wanted to show him what it feels like to be on the receiving end of such hate speech... no more, no less...

Technically it's not hate speech per se, he only said he is glad he doesn't live in a country where incidents like the one mentioned happen frequently. He didn't say he hates Americans, that would be hate speech.

For Henriksson to see the US, I'd like him to come to Boston/Cambridge, where he would find people he could agree with :D

Hate speech? How is the idea of me not liking the idea of living in America at all is 'offensive' to you? I would be happy you don't live in Sweden if you wouldn't like the idea of that much at all.

Geez, I had no America consider me such a valuable asset they're missing out on. :P

Nah, some you are pretty cool ("There are bound to be good people in a country of 300 million" as my father says) just as there are plenty of jackasses here in Sweden. I just find American society to be undesireable for a multitude of reasons, just as I wouldn't like to live in China, even though I have a few Chinese online friends. Well, Europe's not exactly a paradise either, but it's the best place there is right now.

which is why i want to move to europe. i realize it's not some amazing perfect place but the attitudes of europeans is a little closer to mine than the vast majority of americans.

not to mention i think the poor attitude of the americans will eventually end up sinking this country soon enough. ie, i need to get the funk outta here soon.

all the nutjobs are coming out of the woodwork thanks to reagan and rove's efforts to politicize the religious extreme right wing...and that's a monster that should have been left to sleep.

Americans have their own peculiar problems. Getting them to respond to danger is like herding squirrels. It is not easy to do. On the other hand we do not have the accumulated rot of Europe (most characterized by the French, who are a disgusting lot). The European who best understood America was Alexis de Toqueville who wrote a book on the subject. I discovered the best way to deal with my countrymen is not to expect too much from them. That way I am almost never disappointed and I am sometimes pleasantly surprised.

We are a silly nation, but we have enough sense to have saved Europe twice from destruction, brought about by its own corruption and mendacity. Basically, Americans are more honest and less cynical than Europeans.
