Actually, that's not what Finkelstein disagrees with.

He disagrees with the assertion that the Palestinian population was substantially composed of immigrants to the region from other Arab and Ottoman controlled regions. In so far as his scholarship is accurate (and I am not prepared to wade into that nest of thorns!) it does not go to the question of whether or not a, "Palestinian" population exists, but rather their geographical origin.

For my part, I am quite prepared to believe that the Palestinian population is native to the land that they claim. But the use of the word, "Palestinian" to describe them, is a 20th century neologism. In it's own charter, the PLO defined Palestinians as Arab nationals who normally resided in Palestine, a definition that incorporates no longstanding heritage other than physical presence.

Hostile Arab states will continue to use the group known as Palestinians as pawns to goad Israel. In this respect I do have sympathy for these people.

Visagrunt is correct.
