Of course not. They are just trying to put one sixth of the economy in the hands of government burocrats.

It's a false economy. There is no benefit provided by having health insurance as a private industry. There is no product that is made with that economy, only money taken by private interests.

The same "reasoning" implies government ought to take over food production.

Jefferson once said that if the government were to ordain when we should sow and when we should reap we should soon want for bread.

Not at all. Food production produces an actual product and doesn't just blindly take money without an actual service. You don't pay for food and then possibly get nothing back in return like you do with insurance, nor do you constantly pay for food even when you're not buying food like with insurance where you're paying regardless of whether you use your policy or not and never see any refunds.

Rob Ford is an embarrassment to Canada. As for the OP, people in Canada hate the Tea Party with good reason... and if Ford is somehow the poster boy for those style politics in Canada, well... his removal from office pretty much demonstrates why this opinion piece is stupid as hell and what "tea party politics" really are

Medical insurances is a risk sharing modality. It has the same sort of value as fire insurance or flood insurance.

Do you propose having the government insure every category of risk? Keep in mind that the government is run and manned by mostly venal, short sighted, corrupt and incompetent people. These are people who could not make living if they did not have a gun to point at you (or its legal equivalent).

So am I venal, short-sighted, corrupt or incompentent? I am keen to know into which category you would place me and my colleagues.

What is it that you do. And could you make a living doing it in the private sector?

No doubt there are some people in government who know what they are doing. But they are in the minority.

One of the most technically advanced agencies of the U.S government is NASA. NASA is ill managed from top to bottom. And their management lies to the astronauts about the risks. That is about what you can expect from the U..S. government. Lies and mismanagement.

Perhaps it is marginally better at the state level.

I don't work directly for the US government but for a government contractor. It is a services contract so we ( meaning I ) work with federal and contractor employees every day.
I can tell you that it's hit or miss with the quality and integrity of both government and contractor employees.
Some are very conscientious and honest while others are criminally complacent. Most are somewhere just below middle so on average you have mediocracy at best.
I could write volumes on the corruption, deception, waste of resources, and fraud I've seen go down.
And, no, it won't get fixed. It won't allow itself to be fixed so the only thing left is to control its growth.
So the question is how much of your life do you really want to have run by mediocre bureaucrats?

Up until 1968 I to worked for firms contracting with governments (federal and state). I saw so much crap that it sickened me, so I vowed right then and their never to work for a firm that does business with the United States. From then on I worked as a contractor for purely private firms that did not do government contract work. I earned a good living and I was finally quit of government work. I worked for over 35 years without taking a cent by way of a government contract. I rendered myself squeaky clean.

It's a safe bet that it's gotten a lot worse since 1968.

Believe that with all your heart.

In business doings with the government there is mammoth waste, fraud, bribery and corruption. Kick-backs are rife and providing the government buyer agent with wine, women and song is as common as dirt.
