From an interview with President McKinley:

Quote:
"I didn’t want the Philippines, and when they came to us, as a gift from the gods, I did not know what to do with them....I went down on my knees and prayed to Almighty God for light and guidance more than one night. And one night late it came to me..: That we could not give them back to Spain -- that would be cowardly and dishonorable; that we could not turn them over to France or Germany -- our commercial rivals...; that we could not leave them to themselves -- they were unfit for self-government...; and that there was nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them, and by God’s grace do the very best we could by them, as our fellow men for whom Christ also died. And then I went to bed, and went to sleep, and slept soundly..."

President McKinley had very good, sincere, and sound Conservative intentions. And, the Filipinos remain avid church goers.

Uh, President Roosevelt died in office before World War II concluded. The problem Japan had was that government subsidized everything to allow them to undercut our goods in trade. The thing is they put themselves in a hole doing so, and then raised taxes which torpedoed their economy. Japan not having a large Christian population had nothing to do with it.

See? In addition to not going to church, they were being very liberal, and thus doubly damned.

'The Philippines was already converted to Christianity I would think because it was under Spanish control. "

Except for the Moros and probably some deep forest groups, like the Tasaday if they exist.

Pandabear is doing a parody. He's obviously making fun of conservatives. Check his older post history and you'll see he's liberal.

I actually side with conservatives and libertarians on the issue of gun control but I still thought the OP was funny.

No kidding. At least Saddam Hussein was in the open about the use of government death panels to torture dying grandma's on life support and force pregnant women into having abortions. I know if I were living in Iraq I'd rather be subjected to Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons attacks than be subject to Barack Hussein Obama's fascist healthcare takeover.

Well, okay. If you want to be all technical about it, and if you want to consider the Roman Catholic church to be Christian, then, yes, the Philippines was in fact Christian before the advent of the Americans.

And, if you want to be even more technical, American soldiers did, in fact, slaughter Filipinos by the thousands during the ensuing Philippine-American war. But, you have to remember--some American soldiers died in the war, too.

So, maybe President McKinley didn't know about Filipinos being Christians. So what? You can't expect an American president to know everything. And, President McKinley did pray about it. That's good enough for me. If God didn't want the Philippines to become a part of the American empire, then He certainly would have told President McKinley about His wishes.

And, because the Philippines was conquered by a conservative president, to this day, I can fly into Manila, buy a gun, and shoot anyone I want. The Filipinos respect America, and the Filipinos respect the Second Amendment.

If I were to land in Tokyo or Berlin, I probably wouldn't even be able to find a shop that sold guns. That's how liberal they are over there!! !

Jacoby is absolutely right. Bush and the Neocons are Trotskyite Republicans. The Bush years brought Conservative-acting socialist progressives disguised as Christian crusaders. Bush spent like lefty and created a fascist-socialist-progressive War on Terror with a Soviet-sounding Commissariat of Homeland Security. He was great at selling himself as a Conservative and he Pretended to be dumb so as get his critics to underestimate him. I am not surprised that they want Gun Control in Iraq. However, it may not work. The Arabs and Kurds love weapons and they tend to use them on each other. Hussein was not successful in disarming his people, so he encouraged them to shoot each other.
Pandabear perhaps is joking. Germany, Italy, and Japan are not failed states. They have problems. Japan is not as socialist or "nanny state" as Germany and Italy. Japan has a tradition of obedience to the state, so they don't have a right to bear arms. They had this attitude long before Europe turned socialist.
Germany and Italy are socialist. As for gun control. Germany is strict, but less strict than Britain. Italy has gun control, but many Italians ignore it, especially rural Italians.
Can't say that these nations being socialist is FDR's fault. They already were that way before FDR. Instead FDR and Wilson are guilty of trying to make the US socialist. I doubt converting populations to Christianity will make them more like us. Bush only paid lip service to religion anyway. Bush is only pro 2nd -Amendment since the NRA backed him.

If Germany, Japan and Italy had been whipped by a good Conservative American president (as the Philippines was), then Germany, Japan and Italy would not be beset by the terrible problems that now beset them--socialized medicine, old age pensions, labor unions, gun control, low church attendance, etc.

Are you sure that President Bush was only "playing" stupid? He conquered Iraq, but I'm not sure that he actually prayed about it before hand. And, I didn't see any evidence that he tried to bring anyone in either Iraq or Afghanistan closer to Christ. Christianizing Iraq and Afghanistan should have been his top priority, as was President McKinley's top priority in the Philippines.

...and you know what else is horrible about Japan, Italy and Germany? Their schools actually teach about evolutionary theory!
