Thanks to Leftist Language Control, we seldom see any more of these black face routines

Nor do we see classics like these any more

No they aren't, thats a natural progression from the ideal of equality. Stereotypes become more limited in scope and restricted to humor.

Stereotypes can help to produce harmful attitudes in stupid people though, and so the leftish argument would go that since stupid people would think stupid things that anything which might potentially encourage them must therefore be outlawed as a crime against humanity - all for the sake of some random pretext.

Maybe so. "Redskins" is a derogatory term for American Indians. A silly name for a football team in our nation's capital. Especially after what our nation did to the "redskins."

But what about the Montreal Canadiens? Notre Dames "Fighing Irish'? The Boston Celtics? And is "Brave" ( as in 'Atlanta Braves') really any worse than "Viking" ( as in 'Minnasotta Vikings')? Both are legendary warriors associated with particular ethnic groups.

honestly the redskins are the only indian team name that I can really see how it's insulting. and that's one that's never going to change. Marquette University changed their athletics team name from the Warriors to Golden Eagles because it might of offended some Indians.

Okay, sounds like a plan.

That's probably what the Demwits would have. Basically using any examples of bad behavior, abstracting it from original context, and using it as a pretense to pass laws to prohibit the rights of people in general. All for the sake of "the greater good" in writing alone.

Agreed, and the American people know the truth now, and the Dems are probably going to lose big in 2012.

The state of Illinois was named after the Illini (or Illiniwek) Indians who originally lived here. As a result of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, all American Indian residents of Illinois were force-marched to what is now Kansas (and were later removed from Kansas to Oklahoma). American soldiers burned their homes and farms behind them.

Naming a team the Minnesota Vikings probably wouldn't be offensive to anyone, given the way that descendents of Vikings were welcomed into American society (particularly in Minnesota). The name might possibly be offensive in some European areas that Vikings had ravaged.

For the University of Illinois to adopt a team name and a mascot to represent a group of people that were completed ejected and rejected from the state would be like Germany naming a sports team "The Fighting Jews", or Turkey naming a team "The Armenians", or Israel naming a team "The Palestinians."

The Illini didn't have quite as far to march as the Seminoles, who actually did put up a fight, and of whom some eventually took to hiding in the everglades to evade capture and deportation. But, naming a team "The Seminoles", what does that have to do with Florida football culture? Why not just name them the 'Crackers?'

And, what do the American people really know about "the truth?"

You know that would probably be considered acceptable, since using a derogatory term against the Horribly Evil Majority is perfectly acceptable.

How about having an Italian sports team called the Gauls though? Do you think that would be offensive to the French? Or the Celts? Or the Pioni? What about having a Mongolian sports team named the Romans? Or how about people just get over being easily offended where no offense was intended?

Just curious, what is wrong with the Montreal Canadiens name? The fan base here in Montreal is enormous and I have literally never heard anyone complain about their name, maybe some of their less spectacular games though

I'm sure that no offense was intended in naming the Illinois team the Illini, and in having a student dress up in a plains Indian costume and do an Indian-looking dance during the half-time show. Probably very few students ever had any idea what happened to the Illini in the first place, or even thought to ask. The whole show amounted to a simple pageantry of ignorance.

Suppose a team in Germany were to call itself the Berlin Hymies, and, for the half-time show, they had a student show up in a fake rabbi outfit, and do a pretend prayer and then a dance that was supposed to resemble a Jewish folk dance. Suppose further that no offense was intended, because the German students had absolutely no idea about the history of Jews in Europe.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the name Montreal Canadiens. That is what you are, after all. Nothing could be more accurate, unless you wanted to be more precise and go with Montreal Quebecois.
