I don't think it's fair to say that the left values collectivism the same way the right values individualism. The left simply have a slightly broader definition of liberty than the right. The libertarian right values individual freedom over coercion as a kind of axiomatic moral value from which all policy should derive. The left also values individual freedom but also sees things like equality of opportunity, and alleviation of unnecessary deprivation/suffering as additional elements of liberty (which applies to individuals, not just "collectives"). Contrary to what the right will say, progressives do not value social collectivism as an end in-and-of-itself. We only look to collective solutions when it is clear that non-collective measures will not address a problem.
I wasn't talking about liberty dude. The left is for social responsibility while the right is for personal responsibility. The left aims to guarantee an equal opportunity and an equal outcome while the right only aims to guarantee an equal opportunity. And keep the bias outta this thread, we can talk about "alleviation of unnecessary deprivation/suffering" in another thread.

You can't claim to be unbiased when you miss-represent what progressives believe. We don't believe in equal outcome. We also aren't "collectivists". That's people on the right putting a pejorative on the left.
I didn't say whether collectivism is a good or bad thing, so don't assume I mean it as an insult just cuz others might. That's for the OP to decide, not for me to impose. And no the left doesn't value collectivism per se, but it's congruent with social responsibility and an external locus of control.

I guess I just don't like the term collectivist. Most liberals/progressives don't apply it to themselves, conservatives apply it to them. It gives the impression that all liberals care about are groups and statisics, not real people.
Quote:
And yes a lot of left wing policies aim to not only give equal opportunity, but ensure an equal outcome. Affirmative action is an example of this. No child left behind is another example. Although that's a policy implemented by Bush, neocons are more relaxed about a welfare state than other types of conservatives and it is a socially liberal policy.

I think Orwell explained this well. A lot of liberals see systemic disparities in outcomes as a symptom of unequal opportunity. Personally I'm not a big fan of race-based affirmative action, but liberals who do support it see it as a way to address unequal opportunity.
Quote:
I don't purposely misrepresent things, so keep in mind it's not "Either you're individualist or collectivist". It's that you lean more towards collectivism if you're on the left and you lean more towards individualism if you're on the right. Frankly I dunno what the hell Fascism is supposed to be since it seems to be the worst of both worlds, but anarchism is far right for sure.

Then I don't know what the hell I am as I don't see myself as "leaning" collectivist. When I think of collectivism I think of things like nationalism and cultural identity movements (of which there are elements of in the Tea Party). Personally I couldn't care less about any of that stuff. I value compassion and individual liberty. That's all. I also feel for the underdog in most situations. I also don't like it when people and/or institutions abuse power and rationalize injustice by blaming/judging victims. These issues which stir strong emotions in me are all issues that affect individuals.

Another way to look at it:

Left is to Right as Modern Man is to Neanderthal.

I disagree with this theory. I am quite individualistic but not necessarily in the way conservatives define it. I would say conservatives are quite collectivist or herdish in their behavior towards institutions they regard as authoritative: their church, a corporation, perhaps the NRA, the Chamber of Commerce, etc. People who regurgitate Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, or Glenn Beck's talking points don't strike me as independent thinkers—individualists. What conservatives mean by individualism, is individuals competing against one another in the economic sphere of life. Liberals tend to be more individualistic in the sphere of ideas and art, being less willing to just go with tradition.

That is a good point about conservative collectivism I look forward to what the local conservative's rebuttal will be to that

Good point.

Domesticated vs Non-Domesticated.

Less Masculinized vs More Masculinized.

Is there a bit of nature involved in left and right?

Not a good point. Stalin was on the political Left. So was Robespierre who was the scourge of France during the Terror.

I'll try to illustrate for you the difference with a few metaphors:

Lying Communists vs. Redneck Nazi's
Conformist Hippies vs. Conformist Rednecks
or
two identical plates of s**t, stirred, with different garnish.

A bit of nature wouldn't apply to everyone on the left or right. Interesting point or metaphor would of phrased it better. Do you think it is possible that nature may play a part?

Actually, Left is to right is the same as totalitarianism is to a Constitutional Republic.

Well - then most academics I have had to deal with have been conservatives. Funny thin - they all said they were libs, especially the least original.

And the people I have known who claim to be conservative - none of whom are competitive in the economic sphere, and most of whom are out of the box thinkers - must be linerals. How did EVERYONE get the label wrong?

Fact is - the Libs I know are the ones who regurgitate talking points - they just dont regurgitate Limbaugh. The self-descreibed consevatives donm't listen to him.

Be real - both the Libs who are not GreenMonkeys like me and the Cons who are not Green Monkeys like me are spitback thinkers, they just sign on to different teams.

Jake is an Alpha Sig, Hank is a Tau Omega - they compete at Homecoming, but they are both chugalug frat types.

Most people in ore near my circle - the ones who can START tolerating and comprehending me, are Green Monkeys to BOTH the Anointed and the Limbaugh crowd.

Off Topic but: You know, Neanderthal were actually supposed to be just as intelligent as modern man. We still don't know exactly why they disappeared, but they are not our ancestors but rather our cousins. Its almost surprising that they didn't make it to the modern era. Not many species exist without a few close relatives around. So no offense meant but I don't think that would be a good analogy.

Right; actual independent thought is a rather rare thing in humans. Liberals and conservatives are, for the most part, internalizing and then repeating someone else's beliefs rather than forming their own.

Yet another reason why democracy is absurd: whoever hires the best PR guy wins.

I was saying individualist and collectivist as pertaining to personal responsibility and social responsibility. Is that not consistent with the locus of control thing? And are there not people who regurgitate what they've heard from MSNBC, CNN, etc? It's ridiculous when people accuse the other side of something that is actually a two way street.

What makes me sad about the thread is how the OP specifically asked people to keep their biases out and yet people can't resist. I repeat, I did not say individualism or collectivism are good or bad things. You want my two cents? Human beings are neither colonial nor solitary beings. Humans have always stuck together as tribes so don't assume I'm using collectivism as an insult since I believe in a balance (though it should lean more towards individualist than collectivism imo).
