I'm not the tiniest bit surprised, because it is.

Is there a risk of spyware with these ads?

I would never intentionally click on an ad, but I just accidentally clicked on one (the "weird teeth whitening tip" one) when I was aiming with the mouse for something else, and the tab that came up had some "sticky" quality which worried me, although I was apparently able to close it without mishap.

I hope my manual clumsiness isn't thought to mean that I "deserve" the possible unpleasant consequences of clicking on a dodgy ad!

I do have Firefox and Adblock Plus (and I even had anti-spyware software installed at one time), but I've been neglecting to keep my ancient Windoze OS (would you believe Win98SE?) up to date, while I try to summon up the energy to migrate to Linux (like any self-respecting Aspie or half-Aspie should).

Spy-wary topic

This is a good question. Alex should be made aware of it; I will inform a mod. 8O

Every ad on the internet is a scam.

I have serious ethical issues with advertising in general, not just the internet. Advertising is a shouting match that rewards the loudest, not the best.

And I say that as someone who is making a game - my income depends on people finding my web site. But I will not advertise on principle - not beyond letting specialist sites know that it exists.

If and when my game gets good enough, those sites will test it and report it. People who visit those sites will tell their friends. people searching for that kind of thing will find it via Google. Great games (like Minecraft for example) do not waste money advertising. And if your product or service is not great enough to get people excited, find something more worthwhile to do with your life. The world has so many needs, it does not need yet another "me too" product.

In defense of the wonderful people at WrongPlanet who need to pay their bills, yes, I understand how ads fund the media, which is why I will not install adblock (but I do try and block javascript and flash - those things shout loudest, steal bandwidth and encourage viruses). But we should work toward a world where people pay what things are worth, not have to pay inefficiently through the shouting match method. WrongPlanet must only get a few cents from me via advertising because almost never see an ad that interests me. I would much rather automatically pay a few cents every time I visit, and cut out the middle man. If media relies on ads then it is a sign that the mircopayment and reputation industries are not yet mature.

Ads from major players like ad sense probably wouldn't allow malware producers to advertise their scams. The ad sense stuff itself kind of spies you in the sense that it tracks all your movements to make a profile of your personality so that they can decide what ads to show to you.

That's reason #45 I use noscript.
