That was more a matter of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". I doubt they actually liked Nazi ideology. In any case, the west has a habit of doing stuff like that; arming the mujahideen against the soviets being a recent example.

You know about the hostility that Irishmen received coming home after serving in UK uniforms in World War II?

Yeah, I'm more familiar with that from WWI though. It's understandable, in my opinion; there was massive anti-British army sentiment back then, so it would have been viewed as treason to work for the british army.

How can you not enjoy a typically triumphant song like this?

So what was that "British terror state" you were going on about again?

It's simple logic, the British regime on average has 2 wars every decade, engaged in 3 at the moment of course. Occupies Countries all over the World, supports other terror states, has murdered tens of millions this last century, if not more.

Death tolls alone are a bit crude when assessing the evils of the British empire and perhaps miss the point. The scourge of tax-farming, the inhumanity of slavery and the cold-blooded cynicism of opium dealing reveals the inner essence of the whole operation. The whole thing was designed to enrich a few at the expense of not only foreigners but the native people of the island of Britain itself.

It all goes back to the Ulster Plantation. I am in favour of a United Ireland, i think there is a strong historical and Anti-imperialist case for it. Short of driving the orangemen into the sea though i think we're stuck with the status quo. Nationalists will ultimately outbreed Unionists and then they'll be a majority in the six counties in favour of becoming a part of the Republic.

Do you mean Catholics outbreeding Protestants? That's quite likely in the near future but not all Catholics are nationalist nor are all Protestants unionists. I reckon the status quo will be here for a very long time.

A lot of middle-class unionists don't bother voting in NI - they can't be bothered with it. I think the 'can't be arsed' vote will win more than anything.

Or deporting all the nationalists to the Republic?

Disgusting talk either way. Protestants have been in Northern Ireland for 300 years and they aren't going away.

Britain owned most of the globe for three hundred years. That doesn't mean that it should continue to do so. Well in the minds of most people who aren't UKIP supporters or avid readers of Niall Ferguson anyway.

99% of prods are orange and 99% of catholics are green. It all goes back to Michael Collins accepting partition if you ask me. If the De valera wing of the IRA had won out the problem would've been solved around 90 years ago.

And what if the inhabitants are, on the whole, quite happy remaining under the Union Jack (see Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Bermuda)? I reckon there are some countries that would wish for it back if they could have it. ;)

There are a wide range of possible futures:

1) The status quo, with Northern Ireland forming a constituent part of the United Kingdom
2) A direct transfer of territory, annexing Northern Ireland to Eire
3) Devolution, restoring to Stormont powers akin to those enjoyed by the the Scottish Parliament or the Welsh Assembly, while retaining British sovereignty
4) A transfer of sovereignty to Eire that restores authority to Stormont, ("One country, two systems")
5) A more autonomous status, akin to that of Man or the Channel Islands
6) Independence

The possibilities are limited only by the imagination and goodwill of the participants.

Reunite NI and the Republic, rename it Happyland, and have it run by Buddhist monks. :D
