This old thread is hilarious. I wonder why there wasn't as much gushing over Obama's 10th grade level speech?

But we shouldn't be surprised that Mr Payack misses the mark; after all, he is best known for the ridiculous claim that a secret algorithm would tell him exactly when the millionth word was added to the English language.
...
Mr Payack, in analysing Mr Obama's speech, gives it a 9.8 "grade level", a mindless bit of math that takes average word-length and sentence-length and assigns it a misleading equivalent in high-school or university reading levels. It takes no account of the skill with which words are chosen and sentences constructed, nor (in an orally delivered speech) how well or ploddingly it is delivered.
Microsoft Word can calculate the "Flesch-Kincaid" reading level for any bit of text. It tells me that the Gettysburg Address is on a 10.9 reading level, and the first section of Winston Churchill's storied "We shall fight them on the beaches" speech rates a downright incomprehensible 12.6. Yet of course neither speech is called "professorial". It seems that for the gullible reporters at CNN passing along Mr Payack's "analysis", confirmation bias is alive and well.

If Payack used a similar method for Palin's speech, putting "satisfactory" in place of "good enough" or delivering many run-on sentences could've made her a genius.

If rioting in the street, vandalism, setting fires to cars, etc. is your idea of thinking too much and speaking English too well, I think you have your definitions confused.

I'm sure that Obres isn't planning to move to Europe for the rioting, vandalism, etc.
If you had an iota of intelligence, then you would know that this would not constitute anyone's idea of "thinking too much and speaking English too well."

I never advertised Europe. I was there as a college student, and I would certainly recommend visiting Europe. There is quite a lot to see.

Europe has gone downhill since you were there, if you had been paying attention to what's going on, you'd know that.

That more than 30 years ago. Quite a lot has happened. I was aware of the cold war ending, communism collapsing, and Germany reuniting. I'm sure that it hasn't been a complete downward spiral.

It really started going downhill in the last few years...

It's better than the US when Hurricane Katrina flooded us and everyone had to leave their homes and now the whole country is in shambles!
That was sarcasm btw, you realize Europe is a pretty big place, and you're talking about a small portion of it, right? You know it has multiple countries, right? And even the shittiest parts aren't as bad as places like Detroit, or Utah.

I think that news shows may tend to over-dramatize things.
