I dislike Christianity because most of the followers of it are so militant. Jesus preached non-violence and accepting people regardless of their culture or what wrongs they had done in the past, yet most Christians are so far from being pacifists and accepting of others it's tragic.

I don't really have anything against the religion itself, but mostly against the ideologic ends that it is being used for.

Try being a church Elder. The other Elders denounced my ideas at every opportunity, but when the very things that I had warned them about came to pass, they criticized me for "... putting ideas into their heads" - which is bullsnot, since I presented my concerns only during closed-door eldership meetings.

It's like blaming Chicken Little when the sky actually falls.

Extra-terrestrial life is just as natural as your life.

Hi. I know I'm late to the discussion, but I'm surprised that the gay rights conflict hasn't been mentioned. I thought that was one of the biggest modern issu-dayes with Christianity... I know that most Christians outside of the Tea Party/fundamentalists/WBC don't act in an... un-Christ-like way towards gay people, but most don't seem to accept homosexuality, either.

Well it was mentioned in the Intelligence Squared Debate by Hitchens (a video posted earlier); also what is even more controversial is the policy of the current Pope with regard to pandemic of AIDS in Africa and claiming that the use of condoms is a sin - the fact that people die due to AIDS seems to be irrelevant.

Quote:
More than 60% of the world's 40m people with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa.

In South Africa alone, 600-1,000 people are thought to die every day because of Aids.

Pope Benedict, who was elected to succeed John Paul II in April, has already signalled that he will maintain a strictly traditional line on issues including abortion and homosexuality.

"It is of great concern that the fabric of African life, its very source of hope and stability, is threatened by divorce, abortion, prostitution, human trafficking and a contraception mentality."

Some Catholic clergymen have argued that the use of condoms to stem the spread of the disease would be a "lesser of two evils".

The Pope warned that contraception was one of a host of trends contributing to a "breakdown in sexual morality", and church teachings should not be ignored.

The UN estimates that without new initiatives and greater access to drugs, more than 80 million Africans may die from Aids by 2025 and HIV infections could reach 90 million, or 10% of the continent's population.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4081276.stm

He actually said that the condoms make things worse. "Aids is a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, and that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems".
Quote:
Aids charities in Britain also hit out at Pope Benedict's comments.

Lisa Power, corporate head of policy at the Terrence Higgins Trust, said: "We deeply regret the continued misinformation around condoms, which remain the most effective way of preventing the spread of HIV.

Some priests and nuns working with people who have contracted HIV in Africa have also questioned the logic of the Church's strict no condom policy.

Of some 33 million people affected throughout the world, more than 27 million live in Africa. More than 25 million have died on the continent from AIDS since it emerged in the 1980s.

The World Health Organisation believes that a "consistent and correct" condom use reduces the risk of HIV infection by 90 per cent.

Africa is crucial to the Vatican because of its growing number of Roman Catholics. Within 15 years around a sixth of the world's Catholics, or 230 million people, are expected to be African.

The continent also produces a large proportion of the world's Catholic priests and there are many sub-Saharan seminarians.

As for the gays, this is how they are treated in some predominately Christian countries of the southern Europe - they threw stones and trash bins at them shouting "Kill the fags! Kill the fags!" causing many of them to be taken to hospital.

Some more similar attitudes from also from the other Christian countries of the southern Europe (except for Kosovo, predominately Islamic):

Quote:
Attempts to hold LGBT events in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina have been violently disrupted. Last year, gay pride in Belgrade, Serbia, was subject to a mass protest which descended into a riot. In Kosovo, gay people have held no events and report being beaten. Last year Macedonia failed to adopt an anti-discrimination law which covered sexual orientation.

I don't hate Christians-
I hate the prevalence of unreason and indifference to or zealous support for suffering caused by unreason.

I can't speak for other religions, but Christianity is quite explicitly based on love.

I am not talking about what they say (propaganda), I am talking about what its written and what they do. They talk about love, and say God is all love (which is true, by the way), but then the same God that is all love will punish you, will let you burn in hell, will not let you enter in His kingdom if you fo not behave a certain way. How is that NOT being based in fear? People is always afraid if displeasing that tempered God.

It's the Hell part that gets me. Not that any such state or place might exist, but what the belief in it says about the person who believes.

What Hell says is basically: If you disagree with me, you deserve to suffer. And it's only a very short step from that, to the person actually being willing to inflict the suffering (be it actual violence, or, more often, curtailing and silencing other possible viewpoints) themselves.

Please, two outright lies each from OT and NT. We will not require any from the Apocrypha.

Why do you hate "the game?"

from all reports this christ fellow was a generally good guy.

His self-proclaimed followers on the other hand have created complex systems through which they live their own lives - some of which are counterproductive or distasteful, especially if we combine observed behavior with prescribed behavior.

So these particular Christians aren't really Christ-like, wouldn't you say? So it's not really Christians that you hate. Those who "play the game," so to speak, really just amount to fakes. Is that, in essence your view?

My take on it is this: Nobody is perfect. Christians accept this and, hopefully, try to become better people through following Christ's teachings, though more importantly it's really just the faith thing. That doesn't make us "mature" people, and this is where much of the misunderstanding comes. A more mature, experienced Christian gets the point, but that doesn't mean he didn't make a LOT of mistakes and learn a lot of hard lessons along the way. That doesn't mean the evils he committed in the name of God are justified. But it's no different than the mistakes anyone can make. If, say for example, an atheist happens to also be an immature jerk, one MIGHT make the mistake that his jerkness is due to atheism and assume, if unreasonably, that all atheists are jerks. It's exactly the same thing. Dawkins-like atheists, I'm convinced, do not best represent the best of atheist-dom. Same goes for WBC and all of Christendom. However, somehow we get blamed as a whole for the failings of that church and people like them.

Similarly, Catholics NOW are not responsible for the atrocities of the inquisitors; yet they're still paying for the sins of their predecessors. Don't make it right, though.

A lot of people, the only use for religion that they seem to have, is a system and method for applying hatred without guilt.

I would adjust a. that religion is not the only type of ideology to which people resort for support for their positions, hatred being just one manifestation of the in-group spirit;

and b. that I think I disagree with the "without guilt". Some, no matter how much support they have for their prejudices, do have moments of doubt which groupthink helps them to erase - I ave known such.

But others have no doubt of the validity and nobility of their position, they just like to have a gang for clout.

Powervolk rarely show any signs of knowing what guilt is, and a gang just augments power. The angry Socialized, however, want the moral ba ckup - and will always find SOME movement which will validate their hatreds.
