Noun
fascism (usually uncountable; plural fascisms)
(historical) A political regime, having totalitarian aspirations, ideologically based on a relationship between business and the centralized government, business-and-government control of the market place, repression of criticism or opposition, a leader cult and exalting the state and/or religion above individual rights. Originally only applied (usually capitalized) to Benito Mussolini's Italy.

Considering that the far right gets away with the most blatantly disrespectful attacks on President Obama, it's obvious we don't live in a fascist state where "criticism or opposition" of the government would otherwise be crushed.

Unfortunately, that is the only descriptor in the definition that does not fit the current state of the US.
I hardly think we're becoming a fascist state, but we certainly are transforming rapidly into an oligarchical plutocracy.

Well, let's go down the list:
1. totalitarian aspirations - not blatantly from either side of the aisle....yet.
2. ideology based on a relationship between business and centralized govt. - R's and D's both definitely into that.
3. business and gov't control of the market place - check (both parties)
4. repression of criticism or opposition - not yet. at least not on a grand scale.
5. a leader cult - definitely. a little bit more from the left currently, but the right certainly isn't above it.
6. exalting the state and/or religion above individual rights. - the left posits that society is more important than the individual and criticizes it's detractors as "rugged individualists" (which, to anyone with a self esteem, is a compliment). the right puts religious values above all else and decries the "godless atheists" of the left.

Umm........I guess some of us have conveniently forgotten the disrespectful attacks against the last president from the left.
Then there's the hysterical comparisons of that administration to the 3rd reich and even the sith...............

Really?
That is ridiculous, Bush lacked the coordination to swallow a pretzel, how much self harm do you think he would do with a lightsaber?

You'd have to ask the liberals.
I remember them carrying on about this when Star Wars Revenge of the Sith was in theaters in '05.
It was insane!

The best part about those absurd comparisons was not that they were jokes, but that they were jokes that soared way above the heads of simple minded partisans who years later bring them up as if they matter

To be fair, I remember laughing at the pictures of Bush's silly faces and monkeys pulling the same face.
When the right did the same thing to Michelle Obama, the left leaning press seemed to go into meltdown about it.
Freedom of speech cuts both ways...

I am not approving or disapproving of it, just pointing out something I find amusing about this particular item of satire

What jokes were those? Do you have some jokes about Mrs. Palin swatting her daughters?

Do Liberals have a short memory... The "joke" literally involved what is basically statutory rape...
The SWATTING reference, has to do with Conservative Bloggers being targetted by liberals whom make prank calls to police to get SWAT teams to show up at the blogger's house thinking there had been a shooting.

No, that's the degree of hysteria the left was spouting at the time. It can't be undone or written off as a joke now.
You all made your bed now lay in it......

Palin is a dishonest, dimwitted theofascist hypocrite who may be pushing an impressive 70 in the IQ department.

Whatever station you watch sensationalized that story, spinning a piece of comedic satire into some lame controversy, probably because they had little else to report on that was newsworthy. "Ooh!! Liberals are hysteria-driven, they're comparing Bush to the Sith!!" Meanwhile it is apparently not a hysterical reaction to invade a country based on weak, faulty intelligence, that had nothing to do with the terror attacks that caused such alarmism to become the status quo in America

Dude, when the left acted with the level of hysteria that they did when Bush was President, it is rather blatently obvious that they honestly believed what they were spewing.

You mean like CNN or MSNBC? Lameness and valueless journalism is their MO.

We were more humored by it than anything. The kind of humor one usually enjoys when listening to blithering idiots make fools of themselves. Laugh but at the same time be thankful I'm not neurotic and hysterical.

All the ant-American ranting from you and your two boys M_P and visagrunt has given me an idea:
Maybe we should liberate Canada next.........
