I think the the definition of an atheist should be
belief that God doesn't exist.Because 1) it demonstrates that even an atheist has a belief, which they do and 2) atheists don't lump babies, animals, sticks and stones together with themselves.
Because that's hard atheism. An active disbelief (what you're describing) becomes a matter of proof/disproof. Many or perhaps even most atheists are soft atheists; they don't believe a God exists, which isn't the same as asserting that he does not. The distinction may seem subtle, but it's very important.
