Yes there are.
Cant be. Since real atheists do not exist, how could they wind up in a Foxhole? The Athiest must proclaim not only that God does not exist but cannot exist...which then brings us back to square one which is..Could there exist a force in the universe of which you are unaware? Anybody who answers that one No..is either crazy or lying. Now could a soldier be mad at God about something and attempt to punish Him by denying His Existence even while bullets are whizzing overhead? Sure. Just like the psudo atheists who hang out at this place and other self proclaimed atheists in the world. They are just having a little ongoing temper tantrum.
My atheist standard is there is no evidence for a god, so I assume there isn't one. Those of you religious nutjobs that keep quoting the other terrible atheists like Stalin & Kim Jong Il freely admit (when it suits) that there are indeed atheists in foxholes, communist atheists at that....
More precisely you do not believe there is a god. That is a statement about your beliefs. To say God does not exist is to make a statement about the world.

The Creation we see around us is the proof. If a person can't see the Hand of the Creator..they are without excuse.
Romans 1: 20-28
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

There is an advertisement recently on hulu where this guy and girl are discussing something she saw on the internet. She claims everything on the internet is true, he asks where she heard that, and she says "the internet". This is humor -- we realize how silly it is and we laugh about it.
Biblical quotes are not valid supporting arguments for claiming the validity of the bible. Using it that way makes people think you are a nutjob, much like we think of the girl in the hulu advertisement. Further, it creates frustration and anger in people who are trying to have a rational conversation.
Please don't use stupid statements like "there are no atheists in foxholes". This is offensive to those of us who have actually been in combat and don't share your religious views.

There are no chaplains in Foxholes.

No, it isn't.Further introspection to this world contradicts any notion that a god that is simultaneously all-knowing, almighty, perfect, and benevolent had any involvement in its design.

Again F*ck you.Quote:
he Athiest must proclaim not only that God does not exist but cannot exist...
Non-sense.But since you ask. Remember that it makes no sense to be agnostic towards a specific myth? I can completely and authoritatively proclaim that the Christian god does not exist and cannot exist. The whole existence of the world in its current state makes the existence of a god that is both benevolent and almighty completely impossible.
Quote:
Could there exist a force in the universe of which you are unaware?
Sure there could. But the force is definitely not the Christian god or anything close to the most popular monotheistic religions. In fact, an invisible pink unicorn is far, far more likely than them. Because at least the existence of our own world does not contradict the existence of an invisible pink unicorn.
So, here am I. I am making positive assertions that your god does not exist. Feel free to proclaim I am not a real atheist.

Quinn, you see, is a magical fork! He is beyond time and space, and it was the vibration of his mighty tines that fuelled the creation of the cosmos and all within it! Don't you see, the universe exists so The Mighty Quinn must have done it!

Do they have tines that vibrate to fuel creation? No? Didn't think so.

Nobody can get no sleep, there's someone on everyone's toes
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here, everybody's gonna wanna doze
All worship The Mighty Quinn to one true creator...

Atheism is a product of critical thinking, religion is the suspension of critical thinking.
I strongly suspect that whether one is atheist or believer is based on an internal 'sense'; a feeling of something being there, or not there. Individuals seem predisposed to experience one or the other in a strong way, or something in-between.
Sensory data always comes before logical constructions that seek to make sense of it.
We have a habit of rationalising or justifiying actions, behaviour, ideas and theories we naturally gravitate towards, or 'like'.
This holds true for such similar dichotomies, such as individualism vs. collectivism; if you don't like sharing, then you may talk up the virtues of selfishness, and think up all kinds of logical reasons why selfishness is superior.
It's a rare person that sets out to prove themselves wrong.

The universe was not created, it simply came to be.

The Bible is a collection of unprovable stories and subjective opinions, written by men who sought to justify the continuation of slavery, the subjugation of women, and the building of empires through genocide.
The Bible does not prove the existence of God.

I had this feeling in support of belief in god. But critical thinking debunked it. Critical thinking is like a virus really, once you start using it on something you can't stop but use it on other things. It was fun when it helped me pwn anti-vaxers, but then it made me figure out about religion. Then about sexism and politics. Finally about myself. It is not perfect and it is a complete work in progress. You cannot underestimate the power and improvement that doubting of your own biases can give you...
What you call "rare" is basically a foundation of science. Read on about Kepler's life.

Religion has the power to brainwash gullible minds by the millions for those not so gullible it has no power whatsoever except reveal ignorance of understanding of science and logic.

Knowing the truth will give you freedom. Both knowledge and freedom are the most contagious virii ever to afflict humanity.

It's difficult for me to blame violence in the middle east entirely on religion. I think it's psychological, cultural and political and religion is just the excuse. I'm not a fan of organized religion, but it seems to me there's a lot more going on there than belief. People feel marginalized, that can make for all kinds of craziness.
