I probably do. As I was a former fundamentalist Christian who knew the Bible almost in and out. And I was crazy about it.

You never really got the Jewish portion of the scriptures. To do that, you need the oral tradition.

Literal interpretation of scriptures is basically a mistake.

Well, you called me there!

On that note, what made you turn?

There will always be (No matter the religion or lack of religion) A group of people who will take it "too far" and split from the program.
That does not mean the "whole" group is bad. That is Generalization and unfair to those who practice their beliefs in a non-judgemental way.
I'm not supporting WBC's actions, however I am agreeing with you that their execution is very poor.

The problem with organized religions is not that all practitioners are bad - far from it. The problem is that organized religion tends to lead to these groups who do take it too far in the name of that religion. Without organized religion, the world might be a better place - I say "might" because no one can definitively prove that one way or the other, but it seems like a real possibility.

You story sounded almost exactly like mine.
You sound exactly like me but with less motivation to be honest.

I was once that "church-goer" type myself. I went because I had to, not because I wanted to.
I did the motions, bought the shirt, etc. I was feeling real good, but later in my teens around n my 16th birthday, I started to challenge myself as to where/why I believe.
I did have a run in with a few Atheists who challenged me (And did a excellent job at that too) Who inspired me to soul-search myself and look for answers.
Which is where I am at now. I'm the dude searching for satisfying answers. The "independent" voter if you will of religion.
I have my own personal beliefs as to religion and life answers.

Best Regards,

Jake

It seems like most other groups are exploiting the blood spilled in Newtown to promote their agenda. That is what the WBC and people on both sides of the debates on gun control or mental health care all have in common.

I am disgusted with both the massacre and the media's reaction to it.

Except of course the numerous parts were Paul urges the church not to conduct themselves in a riotous and antagonistic fashion "Lest the name of God be blasphemed among the heathen."

Can't remember any exact passages ATM, but words to that effect are all over the epistles.

See, its all confusing at the end of the day. The Bible says this but then says something else that contradicts it or at least complicates things

Not every word or instruction in the Bible is clear as snow and well-specified to the point it's no longer vague and ambiguous.

That's what makes it so convenient for those who want to cite the Bible as the justifying authority for the atrocities they commit.

That's also why secular laws -- as messy as they may be to create and enforce -- are the preferred method for determining right and wrong (except among those whom the law would convict).

Oh I wish this would happen to WBC oh so bad! If a thunderstorm were to hit striking the church it would be magic and nobody would go to jail for arson hahaha!

I find your stance on it confusing. I'm going to paraphrase it just a little bit.

Basically, you denounced your religion on the following terms.

Lack of Conclusive Evidence.
Feeling of Lieing to Yourself Intellectually
Psychological
How Can God Allow Evil in The World?
If God Create Hell, He Cannot Be Loving and Compassionate
God Is an Angry Narcissistic Personality.

I'm going to take those statements at face value and dig a little deeper. I see a recurring meme. You are acting like your a victim and blaming "God" for the circumstances. I'm not disagreeing with your or anything. I personally believe that people have personal motives as to what/why they believe. I find it a little confusing. Have you experienced some negative reaction to the Church? I feel you "turned" your religion out of rebellion from that circumstance. I'm not defending Christianity, like I said before, I'm a guy just looking for answers with meaning.

I find that what you said in the thread above is the common meme in Atheism. It's very reactionary.

Best Regards,

Jake

I've noticed that too.

Many of the atheists I've met seem to more being trying to spite God than to truly not believe in him, though there are exceptions. ruveyn being the first to come to mind; he doesn't seem angry, he just doesn't believe.

Thank you for acknowledging that.
It really doesn't matter what you or others choose to believe, after all it's your choice!

I feel most are Atheist because they choose not to believe in a "God" that agrees with them. They in turn, rebel not against "God" but against themselves.
And with that, they will spend countless hours searching for answers and meaning , whether it be scientific pursuits or aesthetic pleasures.

Best Regards,

Jake

It's easy really. Christianity is meaningless and lacking in needed evidence and contradicts my moral and ethical standards. As soon as I was able to shake myself off the clutches of the Church (through gradual reasoning and observing unexpected behavior among so-called "saints") I ditched the faith.

It is personal, no doubt about that. But it's still valid regardless.

I'm not searching for any ultimate answers. I accept that I will very likely never find them.
