Why does He hide from us?

Look around. Wouldn't you hide too?

God has a receding chin and a bad complexion. He is ashamed of how He looks.

To test if we are willing to believe in Him. That belief would be meaningless if we had no way to convince ourselves otherwise. It is clear that God exists, but in the same way that it's clear that there are right and wrong actions, that the world really exists and we aren't just dreaming, that other people have minds of their own and we're not the only sentient being surrounded by a bunch of drones, etc. People can and sometimes do convince themselves that these things are false, but it's considered abnormal and/or unreasonable. If we deny the existence of God, it's a way to avoid responsibility. People can rationalize it with logic, but they do that because it's what they want to believe, however subconsciously. This should be clearly consistent with human nature - people can nearly always rationalize the conclusions they like.

This seems to me to be a very complicated rationalization. Explanation that the God doesn't exist seems much easier for me.

So many of the religion threads on this forum boil down to this one argument. The one in this subject title.
Because I believe in God, in order to satisfy my intellect I have to have an answer to it.

So ladies and gentlemen of the WrongPlanet forum;
Why did God place us in this world, and then hide Himself from us?

there is a story of a woman who was walking home from work one evening after dark. Along the way she realized she had lost her paycheck and began to search for it. The hour had grown late and her husband came looking for her. He found his wife under the glow of streetlamp obviously searching for something. When he reached her he asked "what are you looking for?" "I lost my paycheck on the way home from work and I can't find it" she cried. Immediately he began to help her search but after a long while he looked up and said "are you sure this is where you lost it?" "no" she said "I lost it back there somewhere" pointing down the darkened street. "What? you lost it down there? If you lost it down there why on earth are you looking for it here?" he demanded. "Better lighting" she replied

God dwells in belief and to the intellectual belief can be like the darkened part of the street. If one never intellectually explores the concept of belief just because they do not like that believing may be the answer then the question is no longer intellectually based but partial and emotionally driven. The terms intellect and belief are not antonyms. Intellect and belief actually make grand companions.

That is very well-put.

Believing what you have already said ( and I do ) there must be a real payoff.
I believe in heaven and hell, ( and I also believe in reincarnation.)
From what I have read, the entry to heaven is a very high standard.

Maybe God just can't reveal himself to us. I know that God is supposed to be omnipotent, but even mainstream theologians accept that God's omnipotence doesn't mean that God can do everything. Some things are fundamentally impossible even for God, and so God just can't do them. Maybe affecting the physical world is one of those things.

To stay mysterious.

Never good to show yourself if you want to appear as such. Once you do, [some] people rebel.

It just occurred to me. God is not hiding. Most of us are just blind.

All gods are hiding. That is what they do. Has anyone ever seen Odin or Vishnu?
At least there is evidence for Thor. He promised us he would wipe out the ice giants. I don't see any ice giants around these days.

Very. Only His effects are visible to all.
