That is an optical effect, the so-called horizon effect. The super moon high in the sky looks about 14 percent bigger than a normal full moon because the moon is at its nearest point to the earth while in the full phase.

Anecdotal story:

It was 30 July 1969. I know because I have photos of the event with the date written beneath them. My cousins had come over to visit, and my family took them to the Dunes on the North Sea coast for a day out. Although I liked my cousins, I was far more interested in the wild life there and ended up stalking a beautiful pheasant. I got hopelessly lost. By the time I found the lake where we were camping again (and my frantic family), the Sun had gone down. Public transport wasn't as good in 1969 as it is today. We had missed the last bus and had to walk home (10 kilometers) . While we were walking along the road that cuts through the Dunes (no artificial lights in those days), the Moon rose. It was a gigantic reddish Moon. I remember my family commented they'd never seen anything like it before, but my mother also asked: remember that it says in your encylopedia (for kids) that it is an optical illusion?
