A big problem with the story of Noah's Ark if taken literally is that there is no evidence of the type we would expect to find if there ever had been a global flood, but there are multiple lines of evidence of the type we would expect to find if such a flood did NOT occur.

So once again, a literal reading of the Book of Genesis is falsified by the evidence of the physical world. Maybe it did happen and God somehow hid all the signs and planted false evidence to make it look like it did not happen, but then that would make the God of the Bible out to be a trickster or prankster.

So this whole question is bogus because apparently Noah's flood did NOT ever happen (at least not the way most Christians read it).

What is most likely is that this story was adapted from other flood stories of that area from earlier cultures, and the Hebrews took the story and put Hebrew names and characters into it and made it represent THEIR God. It is also likely that this story may be based on a local flood that to the people of that time and place DID cover the whole world so far as they knew or at least THEIR whole world. IF the Bible is true, then perhaps this story is supposed to teach us something spiritual about our relationship to God or His plans for us, His mercy etc. But like I say, there is NO scientific evidence that supports a literal interpretation of the Flood story and there IS scientific evidence that a global flood did NOT happen. So what gives?

I knew you'd post here. :P

I stand up for truth. And those who THINK that there is any scientific evidence for a global flood are very badly misinformed about this subject. People can believe whatever they want, but the facts are as I stated them. There has been a web site around for some time called "Talk Origins" that has information about the misunderstandings many people have, including the sources of where those misunderstandings come from and links to the actual evidence and scientific papers debunking them.

Some parts of the talk origins web site haven't been updated for some time, but it doesn't really need to be updated because the arguments of the young earth creationists were thoroughly debunked years ago and the YECs haven't come up with any new evidence or arguments. The YECs just keep spreading the same old lies, thoroughly debunked, but they keep spreading those lies anyway because if they told people the truth about what evidence actually exists then it would be much more difficult for anyone to believe their interpretation.

Here's a page about Flood Geology

AspieChav was asking about the Noah story as a piece of literature. Not about it as a piece of journalism.

Like the Harry Potter novels the Noah tale doesnt have shred of external logic. But like Harry Potter it should have some internal logic.

The devil, and God, should work as characters. The devil seldom 'does' anything. He 'acts' by luring mortal humans into action, or inaction, through temptation. So it would be out of character (as well as beyond his power) to directly oppose God from doing anything.

Oddly the Noah story doesnt stress temptation much. So there is little call for Satan to even make an appearance.

But the Noah story was fleshed out by comedian Bill Cosby in the Seventies. Cosby portrayed Noah as an overworked 600 year old man who got fatigued by all of that carpentry, animal husbandry, and jeering from his neighbors about that big thing he was building in his driveway. After hearing Cosby's piece one is amazed that the devil didnt persuade him to slack off, or his family to defect, or his nieghbors to have the crazy old man put away.

ah, my mistake then. sorry. It does seem that at least one person in this thread does think it really happened and that there is evidence to support their position. It could be amusing to see the same misunderstandings said again and again except that so many people are so misinformed about reality it is more sad than funny.

Thats ok. Someone responded to you by saying that the 'evidence for the flood is overwhelming'. So both you and that person can feel free to further explore that curious statement.

Between 15,000 and 10,000 years ago was a flood. Many in fact. They were of two types, lakes breaking lose on top of the three miles of ice, which took a direct and rapid path to the ocean, and the ocean it's self rising 450 foot.

It was spread over time, but in just one year it rose 65 foot. The Persian gulf, Red Sea and a lot more were dry land, until the ocean came in like high tide and stayed.

Now being caused by forty days and nights of rain, and covering all land, are not possible. Adam, Noah, are not supported in genetics, there was not one survivor, there were many.

So that leads to a Local Only God, and a small view of the whole world.

That point of view seems to have continued.
