No offence intended but that is absurd. I could no more pray to a god than I could write a letter to Santa at the North Pole asking him for a new bike for Christmas, or leave a tooth under my pillow for the tooth fairy to swap for some money.

Besides, which of the many gods that humans have invented would I pray to anyway or would I pick one relevant to the prayer? Dear Thor, please don't throw any thunderbolts around tomorrow as I need to work in my garden and I don't want to be electrocuted.

Well..it's kind of interesting...as our conscious mind is really only a small part of the reality that we experience..in totality..of what is...
More or less one is directing themselves in a more potential positive way through praying..regardless of the belief ...as long as there is positive belief associated with the thoughts of what people describe as prayer...

It is more or less truly in effect..cognitive behavioral therapy..

But that works..there is no doubt that...

But not for everyone..similar to prayer too...

Some people simply cannot get a benefit from either one..no matter how hard they try...

So in other words neither CBT or prayers are guaranteed to provide positive results to any one particular human being...

But there is no doubt in total effect that they result in positive effect for some people..even if it is just reducing anxiety...

It's a much better accommodation..than washing one's hands over and over..

Yeah..some folks are OCD about prayer..too...

I am not inherently a verbal thinker..so my prayers have always been perceptual ones of energy focus..not necessary as such for any words to be present...

That makes it extremely difficult to chain the force of energy that I understand to be what most people describe as GOD..as really housed by any word at all..Other than ALL maybe...or the one..or a metaphor like Christ for basically the same thing..I understand as such..or Whatever...

It's not the same as Santa. Santa is a human, your personal God is not. God is spirit, and praying helps to strengthen you psyche. I speak from experience. You pray to whatever name you want to give God. I just pray to God because that's what I grew up with. feel the most comfortable with, but if you have a name you like better, you can use it. I believe in the daemon. Don't shudder, it's not the stereotypical fallen angel. More like the disowned part of the psyche that becomes spirit and helps me with stuff.

As an atheist what name would I give to a god? Dear figment of someone else's imagination, please hear my prayer? It is still absurd however you look at it. My comparisons with Santa and the tooth fairy were quite accurate. Perhaps the tooth fairy was the most accurate analogy as I've never seen the tooth fairy, so she must be a supernatural being, but I've seen Santa at the shopping mall. I even sat on his knee fifty years ago and told him what I wanted for Christmas. Putting a tooth under my pillow with any expectations of it being changed for money is exactly how I'd view praying to some fictitious supernatural being. I would be deliberately trying to con myself either way and that is something I'm not capable of doing.

I do recognise that for some people, creating an imaginary friend they call god is useful. It may give them some sense of not being alone or maybe gives them strength believing they have some supernatural parental figure looking over them. However, I'm not prepared to delude myself in this way though, even if creating such an imaginary friend supposedly has some benefits to the psyche.

I went the opposite way - 50 years of trying it and believing it would but it never did work. Heck, I'm quite privileged though compared to some, I guess there is always the argument that some God did that for me, but until I get some actual feedback from the big Kahuna him/herself, I'm not buying it.

I have tried it. It doesn't work.

One of the most revealing things I've noticed about people who pray and believe in a god is how bitter and disappointed they become when their beloved god leaves their loved ones to rot from cancer or their child dies of a drug overdose or they suffer other devastating disasters in their life. Some handle it philosophically and say "it is the will of God" or "God works in mysterious ways" and other come to the stark realisation that there never was a god looking over them anyway.

An imaginary "God" friend may make some people feel happier, but imaginary friends aren't going to do squat in the real world to help them. I have no illusions in this matter. Good things and bad things happen in life. Sometimes we have control of events or we can work and guide them in positive directions but bad things can and do happen outside of our control. Believers in gods are no more immune to personal disasters than atheists.

I'm not like anybody anyone has ever met so I have my own way of dealing with my own God. People are accustomed to the typical God obsessed, God fearing, praying believer with one finger in the Bible the entire time who instructs others how they should pray and if you do it this way it's wrong, God won't hear, blah blah blah. Those people are irritating. I am not like that. I do what works for me and my psyche can strengthen itself through prayer so I do it. I like imaginary friends and am quite comfortable in imaginary realms. Imagination is what I'm about first and foremost. Not everyone's the same.

So, if one is comfortable with their life, fine. All I am saying is, if anyone ever reaches that remote panicky place just try praying and see if it helps.

Well..I think that is the great thing about science and how some people can take their language and greater abilities in this life ..and in general treat them as sacred but not necessarily chained by any one tradition...

When my child died I understood it was a beautiful thing in totality..that he was born with multiple congenital anomalies..as that is the way the beauty of nature works.....

It is some of the anomalies that work that allow us to exist..and along the way there is the fact that what there is as reality..is simply not fair to the individual..what works..works..for the all of humanity...

And yes..what doesn't work equals life is not fair..

Life is not fair..and fair is only another illusion of a construct of language coming from the comforts of byproducts from human collective intelligence..

One really can not blame the ONE that is all for one's illusions..

Is the way I look at it...

But some have no idea what the f*** i am talking about when i speak this way in metaphors...

So they have no way to see my constructs of abstract language that represent the deeper realities..'i think' i perceive...and do my best to see...

So we continue as a species to attempt to develop metaphors to communicate the deeper realities that exist in life..

And science more than anything provides deeper insights into this reality...

But...science does not measure everything in reality..so the mysteries of life will likely continue..as long as the human species exists..

We simply do not have the tools to measure all of reality..and would never likely measure the extent of reality..even if we thought we could..as some people obviously think we already do......most unusually in my estimation for even common sense...

Well.. anxiety is the core of all stress..And stress kills..

Death is pretty much a personal disaster in my estimation...

So..it's a statistical measure in my estimation...

If prayer reduces anxieties for any one individual..there is the real potential for a longer life...

So if it works for one individual great...more power to them ..and if it does not work for another individual I see no reason why they should waste time doing it..

But..here's the thing..just because it does not work for you as an individual..does not reduce the value of it..in real time..positive effects for another individual..

So what ooOO...

Is only saying I think..is try it you might like it..

That is completely reasonable in my estimation..

Some of the folks I know that are highly involved in traditional church activities..and have their strong faiths..and understandings that the positive results of prayer are not a given..are rarely ever anxious and come out of Super Walmart with a big smile on their face for no reason but being alive...

Hard to pin down exactly what it is in their life that makes them this way..but the connections that traditions of religions.. including prayers with other social animals..provides a real life benefit..in the 'cliques' of social groups that exist..

Connections Are a powerful benefit for a social animal..Science already indicates that human connections are the number one factor associated with human happiness...

My 'GOD' that's just common sense...

Watch a social animal dog at how happy that dog is just to have another dog companion or an owner with a pet after a long day at work...

We are social animals..even the ones that are autistic..people need people and connections..

And religion and prayer..is simply a device that brings some people to that place..

For others it might be time in a lab doing experiments on animals to help other human beings...

Different ways of thinking..and surviving..is what makes us able to dominate the planet..

As the Apex predator...

The daemon is an interesting construct.. I see some truth ringing true in that..

Not exactly sure how to describe it adequately in words...

But it is one of those things..the mysteries.. of life..that science will not likely ever develop a tool to measure..

In fact..I think cultures without too many by products of collective intelligence..the more primitive ones..like the ones in South America..or the aborigines that still exist in some countries..have greater access to these mysteries of life..Simply as they are more in tune with them..as they are not bombarded everyday by cultural noise....

Turning off the TV was one of the best things I ever did..and quitting video games...

My mind is much more in tune with the greater powers..that be NOW..if you will...

Easy to pooh..pooh.. this stuff..if one is never connected to it..through perception...

But oh my 'god' if they were..they might understand..then...and only then....

If I were religious I would probably explain that as God saying "OK, let me see you help someone else first to demonstrate that you deserve the help you asked for". A pre-payment of karma, if you will. But that's just me playing the devil's advocate... oh, wait, that would be God's advocate in this case. :)

Haha..seriously you just provided an answer to a two thousand year mystery...the reason Lucifer and Jesus..are basically the same person...

Dam that's another metaphor..but maybe it's clear to someone...

The dark and the light are required for life..It's as simple as that...

Christ and Lucifer are just great metaphors for that..and OH! how 'GOD' loves 'his' devil's advocates...

After all..all life is is action..consequence..effect perceived as light or dark..or positive or negative. or good or bad..or whatever abstract construct of metaphor through the illusory process of the mind that human beings come up with...

But the bottom line is energy..And anything related to passion associated with human beings..inspired by whatever...light or dark..or good ..or bad..makes greater energy..and energy..is what makes the whole thing work....IN TOTAL EFFECT!

I gotta disagree with that part in bold.

After studying A.A., I'm convinced that God's help allows many Addicts to finally kick a habit that has controlled and defeated them numerous times.

Even if that God is false, he provides a cognitive crutch that allows addicts to climb out of the gutter and finally reach the summit of recovery.

God does not have to be real to do real good.

I agree with that; however, personally speaking I couldn't associate such positive thoughts with a god, because such a god would be a figment of my own imagination. I might just as well pray to pink unicorns.

You sound very egocentric. Do you have Aspergers?

God is a figment of imagination that exists to guide humanity.
What does unicorns do, eat grass?

It is a critical point in Islam that God is unique and that noone is like him and that he is perfect in no need and everyone needs him.

Neither gods nor unicorns exist. I see no point in praying to imaginary beings whether you call them gods or unicorns.

I believe that Aspies has a unique relationship with God.
Solitude, and loniliness causes you to put things in perspective.
And as there is something that we can recognize that is called kindness.
There is something that we cant recognize because we avoid seeing it everyday and it is the truth.
God is there, like the truth is there. God is quite often with the truth.

If I told you my name, Mustafa, you wouldnt neccesary follow me (nor am I asking you too).
But if I told you what I say, using the rethoric repertoir of mine, then you might follow me.
Likewise I will bring you some quotes from the quran, briefly. As it is the word of Allah (not to say God).

There is really no problem with that..unless one would suggest that the Quran is the only word of allah..

All humans speak the words of Allah..forever now as long as they exist...

Even the bad words my friend..

They are all part of allah..

There is only illusory separation from Allah
in any case...

Including silly human words..of all kinds..and expressions...

The truth is the truth..silly human constructs of words never change the core of truth..

Of the essence that is..called allah..god..or whatever...allahgodallah..who knows..the raven or the phoenix knows..as well as we do....
