I just saw one episode of DD. They were all outside, having a wedding reception, and there were no flies, bugs, wind, or weather of any kind in Louisiana. Yeah right!

Anyway, my mom told me about the guy using slurs and that he was kicked off the show. She asked if I had heard the news. I hadn't . She told me he is an older man and that's when it dawned on me this guy is probably planning on retiring soon so he wants to go out with a bang, generating the most publicity he can, since he knows he wants to retire anyway. Notice none of the younger guys made the slur?

I think it's just to get more rednecks hooked on DD. This is why he said it.

How did A&E not see this coming? There star is an older man in the rural South with traditional values. Surely he will have some views many of his advertisers find distasteful. A&E should have planned for this in a more coherent way than simply making him persona non grata.

I also think this incident is a sad commentary on our society. I know homophobia is not a value in mainstream American culture right now, but can't we tolerate this uncomfortable viewpoint? Democracies need to be more robust than just shutting up people whose views they do not like.

They set this whole thing up for marketing. They knew it was coming. They made it happen, maybe even with his consent if he was tired of doing the show. There has been tons of DD stuff everywhere you look at Walmart for a month or so now. This interview was set up and released and they banned him at just exactly the right time so people would run out to buy it in support of Phil and "Christianity". It's a setup. The fact that people are falling for it amazes me.

That sounds about right. Now people who never followed the show will buy the merchandise as a show of support. There is one shopping week left before Christmas. This will move that extra stuff off the shelves and save it from getting remaindered. The people who didn't follow the show but agree with him probably outnumber the loyal show fans and now they will buy. Will they lose loyal show fans? Probably not.

When I first heard that there was a program called Duck Dynasty, and that the bearded hillpeople were big in the Christian community for their religious convictions, I figured it would only be a matter of time. Nobody is surprised that the one who made the comments believes what he does, and nobody disputes that he has a right to say it. A&E, as a corporation existing during a pretty rapid social change on gay marriage/rights, did what any sensible company would do, because they're going to lose advertising money as it is, and TV as a medium is hurting.

Meanwhile, New Mexico's supreme court just ruled same-sex marriage constitutional, and that counts a lot more than what some old, southern coot thinks.

"Hillpeople" is totally inaccurate in this case, because Louisiana is flat as a pancake.

That ain't so, and shouldn't be so.

You forgot Houston, also with not only a large LGBT community, but also an openly gay mayor.

He didn't use any slurs as far as I can remember. He was asked something about his feelings about gay people and he said it's a sin and doesn't see why a man would want another man or something like that. He said a little bit about his beliefs about gay people, and those beliefs were taught to him by his church. It's obviously a very conservative, evangelical fundamentalist church, and I think I could probably tell you which denomination it is, but I won't since I didn't read it anywhere yet. It's a common belief that's taught in those churches, both up north and down south.

His beliefs aren't politically correct and even though I don't share his overall religious beliefs, I used to be a very devout Christian and I didn't believe that even then, so it's not all Christians who believe that way, but there are plenty of them who do. I disagree very strongly with his beliefs, but he didn't use slurs, call names, or anything like that. He answered a question that he was asked in an interview, which I'm sure had been OK'd by his PR people before it was asked.

I'm pretty sure this whole "scandal" is a setup so they can get out of doing the show, sell a bunch of stuff right before Christmas, and maybe get Phil some kind of side jobs speaking at churches or something. They make plenty of money in their business, so this is a memorable way to end the show, since the other boys are leaving too they said.

I just can't believe that all those people out there are acting like this is a surprise, and nobody seems to think about the fact that they could have prevented him being asked the one question they knew he would offend so many people with.

I also wonder if any of those people who are doing commentary and giving interviews and writing articles about how he needs to be taken off the show for this were actually surprised at his opinions and why people didn't start protesting after the first few shows when it became pretty obvious what his answer would be on that question.

These comments make me beam. I'm an openly gay man who chose to move to the South because I sensed professional opportunities. I live in Atlanta, and I understand that isn't the "real" south. I also wish they moved on same sex marraige, but as I'm not old enough yet, it's at the level of an annoyance rather than a dealbreaker. The city is also diverse and getting moreso by the day, and I understand that's how the other Southern metros are progressing. Life isn't perfect there, but it isn't perfect anywhere, either. Some of the North Carolina cities are even more developed than Atlanta is. The Southern metro is a new phenomenon, but they are all rapidly growing. I feel the change the South will see in the next forty years will be even bigger than what it witnessed in the previous forty.

I wasn't bashing Libertarians, unless you consider the fundamentalist Christian community to be Libertarians.

Walmart sold t-shirts with Shutzenstaffel insignias and dog food that was known to cause kidney failure for months on end. I doubt they're going to get rid of their massive phalanx of Duck Dynasty marketing products anytime soon. It would eliminate half of their inventory overnight.

As for this greasy wizard guy from Duck Dynasty, he has the right to say whatever he wants. But A&E has the right to conduct their business however THEY want, and he's under contract with their network. When you sign on with an employer, your words can have consequences. If I were a news anchor and I put on a Hitler costume and rode a unicycle down main street, do you think I'd have a job the next day?

Be sure to be juggling fish if you do that.

A few years back at Mal Wart they had StoneCold Steve Austin stuff everywhere, and other wrestling stuff. It was a trend and you don't see it there anymore. This is also a trend,in a few years they will be old news anyway.Easy come, easy go.
I don't foresee them dumping the Duck stuff anytime soon, but I'm enjoying exercising my consumer's right to complain.
