But I find that if you acknowledge them and take control of the verbal exchange, it deescalates things.

some of us lack the "take control of the verbal exchange" genes, and simply cannot do other than the "deer in the headlights" thing.

It's not genetic ... it's learned.

so it is up to the other people in that picture to do the right thing or at least do no harm.

What would be their motivation to do that?

it may be learned but some of us have not been able to learn it, the learning curve is too steep. I know I haven't been able to shed the deer in the headlights problem. it is just the way I am made, no changing it no matter how much I would want otherwise. and the motivation for doing the right thing is that it is the right thing to do, simple as that.

But why is it the right thing? I don't think we have a right to others' silence in a public space unless it is hateful. Nothing in the video is hateful.

disrespectful of the lady's obvious wish to be left alone.

a minor quibble: the dude is not a liberal, except by Fox's extremely warped perspective.

All the sudden after eons of catcalling we're all supposed to light a candle for it or something. Half the women like it, anyway.

I've heard that in some countries this is true, but in the US most women find it demeaning. Catcalls are demands for attention, with the assumption that the target does not have the right to be left alone by complete strangers.

The streets of New York are "our" bar. That idea is wrong in every way.

It's context When people talk to me in streets of New York or public spaces I do feel some threat that I would not elsewhere. If a person was walking right beside me talking to me I would feel very threatned fearing a robbery or a knockout attack. It would not last 4 minites as I would go inside the nearest building.

Thanks for reminding me why I never watch Fox News. Several people arguing and talking over each other over in very fast and loud voices is beyond rage-inducing. :x

Of course I live in a rural town and not NYC, so I don't usually have to deal with that kind of stupidity. Strangers say hi to me all the time when I go out, but that's being friendly and polite and I say hello to them back. I've been called "dear", or "darling" by other people, nearly always women, in stores and restaurants but over here that's considered friendly and not a come-on that needs to be smacked with a harassment suit.

I suspect Canada is more civilized than large swaths of America at this point.

Fox News "liberals" are basically people acting as the strawman of liberals that the far-right has invented.
Bob Beckel might have been a Democratic operative at some point, that doesn't inherently make him a liberal and it certainly doesn't mean he's not above swallowing whatever Rupert Mudoch tells him to in order to get a paycheck.

I also side with the Democrats on many issues, they're just not issues that get discussed here often, and more importantly, this forum leans so liberal that the vast majority of my argument happen to be with liberals. What's the point of me posting threads about things that the vast majority of people here will agree with me on?

Interesting! Please name those issues you side with Democrats and against Republicans.
