Only one third of the world is christian. Those areas that are not christian suffer from all the same problems that are listed in the original post? So it must be something more?

So the question may need rephrased to is religion the bane of modern human society? If it was rephrased to is fundamentalist religion the bane of modern human society? then I might agree.

Ummm... No.

If one were to rank the world religions on matters of doctrinal flexibility, Christianity would probably be second-to-last, only surpassing Islam...

Please observe the mind-numbing variants of Hinduism, not just by the number of concepts, traditions and philosophies, but by the number of scriptures as well:

Second of all, Buddhism isn't even an exclusive religion, and it is frequently combined with other religious traditions (like Confucianism in China and Shinto in Japan).
