As a UK citizen, I don't feel qualified to say what is best for America. Other politicians may well have used similar nonsensical arguments in the past, in fact I'm certain that many have - but that doesn't change the fact that Trump's statement is illogical.

Oh, I amn't defending Trump (other than he, too, enjoys free speech, however offensive). Only that I know too well about how all major political parties and their minions have acted violently and offensively in previous elections. It is the name of the game.

It's not a threat - it is the truth. The People are speaking what they want and if someone who isn't even in the running like Paul Ryan or Jeb Bush gets the nomination because of a brokered convention, there will be riots. It would be the same if it was happening to the Left so quit making Trump out to be the bad guy.

Half the right thinks trump's a bad guy....or at least a bad candidate, its a fringe group of right wingers who want trump. And where is your evidence the supporters of any democratic candidates are going to riot if their candidate doesn't get the nomination? Is Bernie or Hillary saying 'there will be riots, should I not get the nomination'?

No he's not, he's gotten by far the most votes. We haven't had an election like this in our lifetime besides Hillary in 2008 with Barack Obama who stepped aside for the assured nomination in 2016, not to mention the sway superdelegates have in the DNC.

The only reason other candidates secured the nomination in the past so easily was because the establishment cleared the way for them.

If the they steal the nomination when even if he doesn't reach the magic number it will be the only one even close. It wouldn't be right for them to just overturn the will of the people and if that happened then I think you definitely could see an ugly scene unfold in Cleveland but there isn't going to be violence in the streets but rather the end of the Republican party as Trump would run third party. The party elites can get on board or go out the hard way, I think they're prepared to throw the election with the hope that this discontent will dissipate and not be able to organize itself beyond Trump but these issues aren't going away.

I would allow Trump free sway.

He IS going to REALLY put his foot in his mouth very soon. I can feel it...

In this case, I believe it will be more his minions than actually him.

I've known people like Trump growing up in NYC.

He's not a Nazi--but he's definitely not somebody you want in the White House.

i'm worried about more physical violence. more hanky panky with rigged voting machines. more outright thuggery such as hired rentacops physically preventing certain people from voting who somehow managed to elude the other roadblocks to their voting such as missing ballots, closed-down polling places et al. it would not surprise me if the UN ends up having to monitor our elections. yes, i'd say we have sunk that far.

Yep....I can see that with Trump. Just like the old days with Tammany Hall in New York City.

I just don't like the reactionary spirit which Trump is tapping into.

he is the right-wing equivalent of the protest spirit that Bernie is tapping into. a strange symmetry therein. only Bernie is nowhere near as successful at it. a pity. it is like the spirit of negativity dwarfs the spirit of positivity, at least in this world.

I think Trump's supporters tend towards the reactionary. They are trying to stamp out things, kick out immigrants, etc.

If one is a Progressive, one believes in PROGRESS.

Good one!

Ironically, Congress will probably save us if Trump happens to win the Presidency.

If you think they hate Obama in Congress, check out how they'd feel about Trump!

I feel it will be the same Obstructionist Congress---but it will be needed if Trump gets elected.

I've spoken to people who are usually apolitical, and don't get involved in this stuff. Both of Liberal and Conservative persuasion.

But an all-pervasive fear of Trump has bought them into the political dialogue. They just fear the man.
