I'm pretty sure is not the detractors that are prone to weaponizing buzzwords. SJW on the other hand that is pretty much their modus, especially on university campuses.

I think regressive is the best term. You can draw parallels with historical regimes but only so far. It is it own thing.

Personally I simply care about rights. A regressive policy is one which through good intention or malice, they degrade the rights of all in order further their cause.

I think it falls under the following traits:
1. Not being educated enough on how rights work and not considering how their policy would affect individual rights.
2. Not fully thinking through how their policy would work in practice or considering how it may not be a step forward.
3. Being so uncomfortable with the idea that people don't see eye to eye with them that the feel the need to control.
4. Thinking the way to deal with uncomfortable feelings is to create a cloak of sensitivity and censorship when all the evidence of operand conditioning and learnt behaviours says otherwise.

It is not just the right that has been critical of these groups Btw.

The term regressive was coined by those who call themselves progressive.

Actually, I'm pretty sure people hate the spectrum of leftist politics because those politics suck, and the people who push them are off-putting, illiberal, and spend more of their time holding circular firing squads of their own allies over such important matters as which common terms and expressions are currently approved by the Twitter/Tumblr hive mind than they do actually trying to do any of the things they claim to want. But your wild conspiracy theory is good too.

I recently learned a much better term that makes a lot more sense; cultural gentrification. Imagine that you're in this cool, funky subculture, and then suddenly outsiders start moving in cause they like it, but think it would be nicer if they cleaned it up a little, kicked out the riff-raff, maybe sanitize it a bit for their family, etc, to the point where the original inhabitants aren't really welcome anymore, and the subculture is no longer recognizable. Obviously, I'm not talking about white people teaching yoga here, but the underlying idea is not entirely ridiculous. That's actually true of a lot of social justice ideas, they started out perfectly reasonable until young leftists took them way too far and got way too invested in them.

Obama, a cool young(ish) black guy with a soaring message of change won the last two presidential elections (how's the left doing at the local level?), but the US remains a center-right country, and our next president looks to be either a moderate Republican war hawk running as a Democrat, or a blowhard populist of unknown, but not left wing, values.
