I think the NRA would be positively thrilled if someone tried to shoot up their offices.

Don't think the perp would get far, depending on the gun laws of where their HQ is located (DC?)

Anyway, the 2nd amendment help prevent authoritarian government. It is one of (along with others) the reasons no president has tried seizing power and declaring himself President for Life or Emperor or something. It just wouldn't fly.

The purpose of the 2nd amendment is the violent overthrow of the US government should it become tyrannical. That may sound crazy, but it's there for a reason.

While the government would most likely win a conflict between itself and the citizenry, the question is are the powers that be willing to go that far knowing the citizenry can shoot back? No, I don't think so.

If you were to ask most gun nuts about Obama, they would probably already describe him as an authoratian dictator and his government as tyrannical. I continue to ask these people, what are they waiting for? A cop for instance is a public servant and part of the government, so when they get a ticket that they don't agree with, why don't they just start shooting? I am not advocating or suggesting that they actually do that, but it is their claim that that is why they need their guns for.

That is the question. I guess tyrannical is a bit subjective.

However, if everyone is trying to overthrow you, it's probably safe to say that you're a tyrant. And history is often written by the victors.
