I guess the idea I have now is that a few of Pat Robertson's predictions come true giving him credibility with a republican base that doubted him.

Than I would say he faces off against Michael Dukakis in the General Election. In the debates Dukakis comes across as being aloof and cold, wheather Pat Robertson comes across as a person of high moral principles. A Republican worried about the Reagan years being undone also vote for Robertson and eventually he wins.

Coming into office I would then say he uses Executive orders quite frequently, after he decides not the heed to the people or his party but only to God himself.

Imagine having a President who believes God talks to him directly, because that's what Robertson does. On his show, he has what he calls his "word of knowledge," in which he makes predictions that he claims come directly for the Almighty. So far, his predictions are no better than Ed Wood Jr's friend, the psychic Criswell, who had been making predictions such as that there would be a base on Mars by the 1970's.
the
scary prediction would be what a president Robertson would make come true by executive fiat/rubber stamp dominionist congress. 8O

The very thought chills my liver. :pale:
I like to think the blue states would have held out against him and his religionists.

or, absent that, at least done something along the lines of califorewashexit.

So far, I'd like to stay and fight.

but how?

Apparently Senator, Barry Goldwater was really concerned about the Religious Right taking over the country. Maybe since someone as knowledgable as him thought that, it was a real possibility.

Not really. The Republican party seems to have lost allot of those stances. In 2016 they voted for Donald Trump even though he had a history of being in favor of the polar opposite stances they were advocating for.

that is because the religious right wing here very hypocritically and cynically saw the rump as their ticket back into national power. that doesn't mean that if they had the chance they'd not shove their theology down our throats at gunpoint, just like their kissin' cousins in the middle east.

You might be right on second thought. And after all Trump chose Pence as a running mate, they would have to be somewhat influential in the Trump was to make a decision to do just that.

I am not sure if trump thought he chose pence as "impeachment insurance" of if it was a currying of fundie favor- but it will likely come back to bite him later as the fundies really want pence as president.

I can see Pence as being the most likely GOP nominee come 2024 whether Trump wins reelection or not.

Well...you could have Pat Robertson as the running mate of a fictional secular.....Gordon Gecko type real estate tycoon who runs for president on the GOP ticket ( hard to imagine that happening in real life :D , but lets go with this idea). His running mate looses the popular vote, but wins the electorial vote and gets into the White House.

Then this Gordon Gecko type real estate tycoon....gets struck by lightening while playing golf one day...and viola'...Pat Robertson is president.

Barry Goldwater was one of the few politicians I respect/respected as a person. He would be branded a RHINO today by most people in the very movement he started. He had a rock solid core set of principles and beliefs but he thought independently a quality nearly completly lacking in todays politics. He was supporter of gay rights and their right to serve in the the military for consitutional reasons decades ago even though he was baffled by homosexuality

He was very priecent about Pat Robinson and the religous right.

When you say 'radical right' today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party away from the Republican Party, and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye.

Me too. I have allot of respect for him as well. I feel as though he is a true libertarian unlike much of the Republican party today which aims to stop a gay person from having their right to marry, or a drug user from not spending time behind bars.

To answer your question about how he would/couldve been elected: just say that he replaced Dan Quayle as the Elder George W. Bush running mate that year. And then after H. W. Bush got elected he was on the golf course one day, and got struck by lightening. And viola': his running mate Vice President Pat Robertson became president.
