I find that we are frequently "left out" because of the problems people of the "greater society" have, rather than our "problems," per se.

I've seen third pages which developed more than this. May I suggest we try harder?

So, name calling bad but inevitable?

I don't find name-calling to be inevitable at all.

Only "many" of the characteristics?
Not all of them?
That would make us a different species, eh?

Hmm... a familiar style of deflection. So, how can this post offer anything positive?

We all have to find a balance between sincerity and effectiveness. Name calling tends toward effectiveness, and away from sincerity.

It offered me a moment of amusement while posting it. :)

Amusement is why we post in the first place.

If I wasn't entertained by being on WP, I wouldn't be on WP.

By entertainment, I mean the Aristotlean notion of entertainment as something "instructive," in addition to the "Jerry Springer" type of entertainment....and all points in between.

Sigh....
From what I've seen so far this thread seems to have been started with dubious intent.
PPR isn't for snowflakes. If you are one then it would be better to simply avoid.
Accept that there are no solutions for "fixing" it.

I just think some people just like to argue for the fun of it.

Either that, or they argue because they feel a need to validate their views on things. For me, it's some of both, though way more of the latter. As much as I hate to admit it, I have an almost pathological need for validation. I actually envy people who don't give a crap what others think, because I'm very much not that. I care way too much. It drives me insane too.

I think that one person you mention is boycotting me.....again
Validation? No, more like some people are just natural born flak magnets and I'm a flak gunner.

Who, Kraichgauer or kraftiekortie?

Anyway, since "gunning" down "flak magnets" seems to be your calling, couldn't it be argued that doing so validates your existence as a "flak gunner"? :P

That's what I've learned discussing politics here and on Reddit. Online debates can be a warzone, and if you can't take the heat, it's best to get out of the kitchen.

I thought maybe he wants to put himself in the position of being in charge and setting the tone. And you need to work harder at earning his respect.

Indeed. Just as long as the heat stays within PPR rules, which are the general rules of participating in a debate.

I'm sensing some active hostility toward having more discussions and less name-calling.

Not at all. The rules of a debate vary, but this ain't any kind of formal debate. The rules of internet forums have a far more limited intent.

The forum rules just keep it from exploding. They don't set any kind of intellectual standards for comments.

You know exactly who I mean. If I said who I'd be accused of "baiting".

More primal than that. More like popping balloons with a cigarette, something that's just hard to resist doing.

There are only a few ways to give a reasoned (debate-type) response to a comment, but a near infinite number of logical fallacies, diversionary techniques, and trolling strategies.

If there are a sufficient number of sufficiently dedicated people, any thread can be derailed. At the least, real debate can get reduced to a tiny percentage of the space on the page, obscured by clouds of nested snark.
