Mediocrity is a virtue only to the mediocre.

So are you calling yourself a loser then? Surely you're not conceited enough to consider yourself the best in your field, the most intelligent human that walks the Earth, or the greatest physical specimen alive?

You also have to know what to do with yourself in times of peace as well.

Seems like there are people who are good at handling times of war and bring it with them during times of peace - thus they can't find any. Then you have the almost dyed-in-the-wool cooperative types where when everyone starts defecting the world gives way beneath them and they're left to the mercy of the elements - that doesn't end well either.

Trying to train myself to be more flexible in this regard and at least be ready for my environment's allowances at a given time. I really try to hold the line within myself so as not to let unfavorable outward conditions charge their way inward too far but even there success varies with severity.

Well said sir, couldn't agree more.

Most of life is not about being the best but about being good enough...
Over and over again, mediocrity gets promoted only because greatness cannot be found; but when greatness suddenly arrives, the mediocre shudder in fear of being revealed as suddenly "not good enough" because the standards of greatness have just been raised.

Be careful that the standards you have set for yourself never get raised above you by someone else.

Better yet, work on becoming the standard by which other people are measured and found wanting.
It would be unhealthy and unfair to measure me by other people's standards.
It would be unhealthy and unfair to set me as the standard for others.

Human societes are not simple, linear structures. They're full of branches and niches.

Have you found your niche of success?

I have found my niche of being stabily valued and respected, which is a success that my previous history of winning various competitions never granted.

When I stopped worrying (and I mean worrying) about what other people think of me is when I started rally experiencing success.  So what if they whine and complain that I took advantage of the situation to elevate myself above the norm?  Who the ████ cares?  While they were busy partying and socializing and carrying on about superficial matters, I was busy earning my degrees and learning how to succeed.

It sucks to be them now, and that's just the way it is!
So, you set your own goals, too.
There is a huge difference between setting a goal like, "show up for class" and setting a goal like, "turn in all of your homework on time and without errors, and ace every quiz, test, and exam."  People who make the former choice end up working for people who make the latter choice.

If you are going to set your own goals, make them meet or exceed the accepted standards of success, or accept the fact that you will always be a loser.

Harsh, but true.

Not necessarily.

I was the latter group and nobody even wanted to hire me.

They might just burn out.

Or be HFA in a NT world where nobody wants HFA people.

Or take a different path in life.

Or live in a world with fewer jobs available.

I've stopped caring what others think now. If I make an investment that I knows p*****s someone I know off I make sure I subtly drop the hint of what I done. It gets fun after a while.

Being more than just stably valued and respected -- being admired and emulated, for example.

I have been and I didn't feel comfortable with it, so no.

There is no greater vindication than success.
