Well, anyway, my general rule of thumb is: if a phenomenon can be explained by people acting selfish and/or careless, there's usually no need to seek more sophisticated motives.
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." -- Hanlon's Razor, by Robert J. Hanlon, who submitted the statement to a joke book.  Similar statements have been recorded since at least the 18th century.

^ I believe it's simply an observation, valid in any times.
Can be used as Occam's razor for conspiracies.

The opposite take on Hanlon's Razor would be to assume that a simple misunderstanding (due to ignorance or cultural differences, for example) was actually a deliberate and malicious act deserving of blaming, shaming, and punishment.

Have you ever seen it? Maybe on WrongPlanet? Impossible! [/sarcasm]

But seriously, it's common outside of WrongPlanet, too. That's why a socially inept Aspie can have a really miserable life for their frequent miscommunications.

Sadly, there is no appeal, and the poor victim must simply deal with quietly it and carry on as best he can.

While being punished for an innocent mistake is common in the meatworld, it is also much more common in the meatworld to be able to explain one's ignorance and intent, thusly mitigating the punishment or doing away with it entirely -- in the cyberworld, not so much.  You are judged either guilty, or very guilty, and there is no appeal in either case.

A reflection on the original topic:
Once f-book, under changing political winds, starts attempting to curb conspiracies, every single conspirationist will have a "proof" f-book is "part of the scheme."

Conspiracists had always had "proof" of everything they claimed, whether they had "reliable sources" or were merely "connecting the dots".  Facebook is just one more pig in the pen.

Conspiracy theorists will also twist facts. Trying to reason with them and think they can be saved will just exhaust you and leave you upset.

On WP, I'm just trying to make them stick to the rules.
I often (but not always) fail - the rules apparently can be part of the conspiracy, too.

Yeah because the mods are bias for the left and are bias against the right.

The other way around, too.

Careful, LG ... while arguing with a moderator will always get results, they may not be the results you want ... or like.

Hey, I really enjoy people reasonably disagreeing with me!

I was not joking.  It is not a good idea to argue with a moderator.  Would you argue with a cop?
