Is the GOP's extremist wing now too big to fail?
Sounds harmless enough, until you think about how that might be abused. People generally don't come to the centre through a winding road of reason and learning. Instead they like to imagine themselves as in the centre and then align themselves with it, come hell or high water.
I think the psychology is linked to middle-range pricing theories. That is, in the retail world, most people who aren't on a tight budget and who are presented with a selection of products that they don't really understand will often pick a product in the middle of the price range. They don't have the patience to investigate quality or the various trade-offs and technical specifications of the product ... or even read reviews from people who've actually bought the product in the past. So they pick the middle figuring they won't get ripped off or get a terrible quality product. It's usually ok, but you can see how someone might end up with a pile of junk with such a buying strategy.
In politics and culture the parallel should be fairly obvious. Most don't have the time, interest or even capability to do any real thinking or investigation, so they "buy" the centre instinctively, and align with acceptable opinion. No surprise then when you see politicians (regardless of their actual goals) of the last 70 years bend over backwards to be seen as in the centre and simultaneously paint their opponents as extremists and lunatics. Other forces, political or otherwise expend huge amounts of energy moving the Overton window, changing what is perceived as normal, fashionable, acceptable - "centrist", mostly through the medium of television and film.
And suddenly here we are now in clown world, where the centre has no real grounding in history or philosophy. The masquerade that calls itself the centre today is really the Ritalin-doped, gender confused love child of Deng Xiaoping and Margaret Sanger, conceived at a drug-fuelled homosexual rave. A rave sponsored by international mega-corporations. The mask might just now be beginning to slip though.

Oh bless your heart you're adorable. Hey everyone! Now it's MY turn! This should be entertaining...
Calls himself The Oracle of Truth but doesn't like being called the ministry of facts - figure that one out...
And anyways, half the time all you're doing is quoting other people - so if you're going to rely on using other people's words to represent you, then others don't have much choice than to put other peoples words in your mouth...
Is mocking allowed here now?
[Pepe rubs his paws together]
Sweetie, 'The Ministry of Truth' is said *ironically*.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministrie ... y_of_Truth
You won't because you can't.
This type of straw man argument is typical of some people.
It may be 'implicit' to you, but fantasy is just that.
BTW, You do know how 'context' works, right?
Regardless, find *one* example, in this context, where I have said "both sides are equally bad", and we will take it from there.
Well, you can't and you have admitted that.
But now you are into 'mindreading'.
'Interesting'.
You do realise that suppositions are not facts, right?
What sort of a 'Seinfeld bizarro world' do you live in?
What part of 'Both sides have a$$holes' is the same as saying they are both equal in a$$holedness?
I actually did explain this in another thread, where the ultimate conclusion was that *both sides* are acting abominably.
I used this example:
Stalin murdered more.
*Both* were despicable acts.
BTW, Fnord is happy that the far left of politics has replaced a 'heart' with a 'fist'.
Do you agree with him?
You're a cute l'il fella, ain't'cha? Meanest fluffy in the enchanted meadow, he is. Rawr
I said Ministry of FACTS, not ministry of TRUTH. Surely you can tell the difference between these words. Nice job at distortion though. YOU call yourself the oracle of TRUTH.
Since when is "implicit" related to "fantasy"? There is a bean under one of these three cups. It is not under cup one. It is not under cup three. Therefore, it is implicit that it is under cup two, by elimination. This is not an act of fantasy. This is an act of logic. You can go three directions. North south or east. Explicit would be saying "go east". Implicit would be "don't go north, and don't go south", implying to go east. I'd have thought you'd know this. But if making implicit reasoning equivalent to fantasy makes you feel better, have fun with that. I'll remember it next time you implicitly infer something. Shouldn't take long...
So. Your words, directly above
"Regardless, find *one* example, in this context, where I have said "both sides are equally bad", and we will take it from there.
very closely followed by
"I actually did explain this in another thread, where the ultimate conclusion was that *both sides* are acting abominably."
So I guess now we're splitting hairs and differentiating between various levels of "abominable" - some "abominable" is more acceptable than others I guess. Cherry-picking which "abominable" you decide to whine about sounds an awful lot like bias. Or else you wouldn't be sorting which "abominable" to seethe about, and which "abominable" to make excuses for. Interesting that you can recognize the difference between these two margin-thin quibbles, but then equate so many other things.
I would guess we live in the bizarro world where you whine about how people overuse comparisons to hitler, and then draw comparisons between people and hitler. I expected better from you.
And, I never admitted that I couldn't find any examples of you saying that. You (mistakenly) assumed it to be implicit, because I chose to address your reasoning rather than your carefully crafted question directly. Which according to you means it's a fantasy. So...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for the GOP, once you invite enough extremists in, it's hard to get rid of them, lest they feel betrayed and decide to target you next. They've created a problem they're not equipped to handle, started a fire they don't quite know how to put out.
Regarding "too big to fail", I suspect it has more to do with the fact that many states just keep electing the same people over and over again. Remember, the very officials the citizens express so much disdain for, were elected BY the citizens. In some cases, they run unopposed, and win by default.
Succeed or fail, either way, things need to change.

It’s pretty sickening that extremists act like the people who support American values like democracy are not patriots.
Nationalism is a cancer upon our society. Nationalists are opposed to everything that is good about America. You lost. Get over it.
See, this is part of the problem. With a broad brush, you've painted everyone as an "extremist" if they're critical of any facet of the current Biden administration.
So, everyone who voted for Trump is an "extremist." Even those of us who didn't vote for Trump and were critical of him (yours truly) are likewise extremists for being critical of Biden now.
In theory, a democratic system allows for competing political beliefs, but now we're seeing a scenario where anyone and everyone who doesn't tow the party line is automatically deemed an "extremist" regardless of their varying political beliefs.
And you're 25 years old and from the UK. Your earliest memory of a US presidential election is only 2012, and that was filtered through British media. What makes you the expert on American ideals and values and how Americans collectively feel about the current state of affairs?
I don't see were in their post they claimed anyone who is at all critical of the Biden administration is an extremist, or where that is implied.

This denial is axiomatic nonsense.
You claim you acknowledge there are a***holes on both sides, yet you only obsess over one side.
What an odd thing to say.
You seem to miss the part where I agree there are a$$holes on the right side of politics.

Here’s what it would entail:
1. Legalize all drugs nationwide. The War on Drugs was really the “War on Blacks”
2. Legalize public nudity nationwide. Laws against it violate separation of church and state (including Texas’ anti-dick pic law)
3. Close down all places of worship (frankly, as practiced, religion—Christianity and Islam in particular—is just an excuse people use to avoid sex, and not much else).
4. Strict anti-hate speech laws (includes laws against misgendering trans people or using the former names of sports teams, so if you say “Washington Redskins” or “Bruce Jenner”— off to jail you go.)
5. Denial of evolution, climate change or the Holocaust would result in criminal charges.
6. Fornication would be mandatory, especially for Christians and Muslims.
7. Total gun ban, which would be enforced much more strictly in the South.
8. Teaching creationism or abstinence-only education would be criminalized. (abstinence would already be criminalized, per rule #6)
9. Repeal all anti-alcohol laws (in other words, no more “dry” cities and counties). The Prohibition of the 1920s was rooted in racism.
10. GOP governors who backed Trump, such as Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis, would receive life in prison for complicitness in Trump’s crimes.
GOP governors who did not back Trump, such as Phil Scott and Larry Hogan, will not be affected.
An estimated 1.5 million were killed in the actual cultural revolution so I would not want to go close to anything like that. If somehow you can get the constitution tossed you will have a lot of the same people who have messed things up with unlimited power to do things because checks and balances would be gone. Number 6 would require mass state enforced rape. Unlike the cultural revolution or the American civil war the resistance will likely have a lot of weapons of mass destruction. Subduing the counterrevolutionaries would result in millions upon millions of dead and wounded and the economy thrown back hundreds of years.

'Interesting'.
Name one
Functionally, you're basically saying "I CAN admit when I'm wrong!" but never ACTUALLY admitting instances where you're wrong.
So yeah, you SAY "a$$holes are on both sides", but that's as far as that statement goes. However, your BEHAVIOR, is predominantly obsessing over "the left's" supposed atrocities. What you SAY, and what you DO, are two different things, and just cos you SAY you do something doesn't mean you actually engage in actions that support it.
It's like a person saying they eat healthy, but then when they describe what they ate, it's all unhealthy food. It's almost as if "saying things does not make them true
So, while you SAY
"Both sides are bad"
You spend most of your time going after exclusively
"ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! ! ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! ! ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! ! ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! ! ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! ! ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! ! ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! ! ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! ! ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! ! ThE lEfT!! ! tHe LeFt!! !"
While only occasionally dropping a vague "both sides r bad, mkay".
"The Left will destroy the world! Oh, and there's a few bad apples on the right, too. Impartial!! !"
Speaking of interesting, it's interesting that you keep cherry-picking smaller and smaller sections to respond to, and have gone back to the hummina-hummina-who-what-huh-I-don't-understand tactic of avoidance.
If you're gonna say such funny things, at least go "HONKA HONKA!" from time to time. It's old and cliché, but it still works.
"The right are fascists" with my statement "there are dirtbags on either side of the political divide.
But you think "fascism" is an overused term, dontcha?
The term 'fascism' has very poor connotations.
The strategy, particularly by the left, is to influence people's emotional state of mind.
This reduces rational thinking.
This is psychological-manipulation and is unethical, no matter which side of the political divide is involved.

You forgot to say "HONKA HONKA!" - it works wonders
So "fascism" is an overused term, except when you use it. Convenient
Well, if the Ministry of Approved Terminology says so, it HAS to be true!
The Holy Oracle of Acceptable Truths can't be wrong!
You also forgot to reply to everything except the easiest low-hanging apple, and even that you did a mediocre job of polishing it.
Kind of you to NOT address your use of Hitler comparisons, despite how much you whine about Hitler comparisons.
Kind of you to NOT mention a single evil right winger, or their evil right winger acts. You claim they exist. Name one. I'm waiting...
You were eagerly rubbing your paws together before. What happened? All the air seems to have gone out of your sails. I thought it was MY turn. Still waiting...

Half of Republicans believe false accounts of deadly U.S. Capitol riot-Reuters/Ipsos poll
Three months after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to try to overturn his November election loss, about half of Republicans believe the siege was largely a non-violent protest or was the handiwork of left-wing activists “trying to make Trump look bad,” a new Reuters/Ipsos poll has found.
Six in 10 Republicans also believe the false claim put out by Trump that November’s presidential election “was stolen” from him due to widespread voter fraud, and the same proportion of Republicans think he should run again in 2024, the March 30-31 poll showed.
In a recent interview with Fox News, Trump said the rioters posed “zero threat.” Other prominent Republicans, such as Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, have publicly doubted whether Trump supporters were behind the riot.
Last month, 12 Republicans in the House of Representatives voted against a resolution honoring Capitol Police officers who defended the grounds during the rampage, with one lawmaker saying that he objected using the word “insurrection” to describe the incident.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll shows a large number of rank-and-file Republicans have embraced the myth. While 59% of all Americans say Trump bears some responsibility for the attack, only three in 10 Republicans agree. Eight in 10 Democrats and six in 10 independents reject the false claims that the Capitol siege was “mostly peaceful” or it was staged by left-wing protestors.
The disinformation campaign aimed at downplaying the insurrection and Trump’s role in it reflects a growing consensus within the Republican Party that its fortunes remain tethered to Trump and his devoted base, political observers say.
According to the new Reuters/Ipsos poll, Trump remains the most popular figure within the party, with eight in 10 Republicans continuing to hold a favorable impression of him.
“Congressional Republicans have assessed they need to max out the Trump vote to win,” said Tim Miller, a former spokesman for Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush. “That that is the path back to the majority.”
In the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, only about three in 10 independents said they have a favorable view of Trump, among the lowest level recorded since his presidency. Most Americans -- about 60% -- also believe Biden won the November election fair and square, and said Trump should not run again.
Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, one of Trump’s top Republican critics in Congress, has criticized the push to rewrite the history of the Capitol attack.
The disinformation effort is “such a dangerous, disgusting spin on reality,” Kinzinger wrote in a fundraising appeal to supporters last month, “and what’s even worse is that it goes unchallenged by so many in the Republican Party.”
The window for the Republican Party to distance itself from Trump seems to have passed, Miller said.
“There was a chance after January 6 for Republican leaders to really put their foot down and say, ‘We can’t be the insurrectionist party,’” he said. “Now that opportunity is totally gone.”
The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States. It gathered responses from 1,005 adults between March 30-31. The poll has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of about 4 percentage points.

Of course they believe this nonsense. They can either accept reality for what it is and adjust their world-view accordingly, or they can collectively dig themselves deeper into denial.
Of course they don't want to accept reality! Reality has a liberal bias! You gotta get out of the mainstream reality (msr) and go to fantasyland to get the real facts!

Reality doesn't have any ideological bias. That phrase just satirizes how often far-right talking points rely on dismissing objective reality as just an ideologically motivated opinion. Of course not all observers notice this trend.
