Why do so many immigrants come to the US if it's racist?

If you get shot by the cops, you don’t care about relativities or statistics.

We are “relatively” less racist than some other countries—but we can certainly make an effort to be even LESS racist, or NOT RACIST at all.

Yes and this is what pisses me off about them. I was scammed out of 8 thousand dollars back in India. I bet that sammer thought that as an American I am rich and so all this money is nothing to me. He didn't get the concept that the prices in America are higher too, so living on American salary with American prices is the same as living on Indian salary with Indian prices.

Although I guess thats not always true. By American salary I mean graduate student salary, which is what I am getting in the US (which is around 1500 a month). When I hear people say that Americans are getting salary that are few thousands I am like "wow, if only I had that kind of salary, all my problems would be solved". But in any case, as far as me, I never had a 2 thousand salary, much less 4 thousand or whatever Americans are getting. So why should I suffer for the fact that "other" Americans are so rich?

To make things worse, back then when I was in India, I had a huge credit card debt from the US, and I was supposed to pay the US-level debt on my Indian salary which was super hard. That was actually the reason I fell into that scam: I was hoping I would pay it off with the money he promised me. Now, I actually told him about that debt, that was the whole context of it. So I don't get why he STILL thought I was super rich. Did he assume I just made the whole thing up because I am so greedy -- like he assumes most Americans are?

By the way, one thing he said at some point is that he would pay me back the money I gave him if I help him get visa to the US. He doesn't get that just the fact that I am from America doesn't mean I am all powerful that I can personally give him visa. I don't know how to do it even if I wanted to. In any case, if other immigrants to America are anything similar to him, then I can see why Americans hate them.

Again, in other countries they probably get shot by the cops too.

The OP was asking why do people move to the US. So yes, they do look at the statistics. If they know people get shot by the cops both in their own country and in the US, but in their own country they get shot a lot more often, then why would incidents in the US be stopping them?

Speaking of police brutality, in India the cops are horrible. Its part of their "job" that they would beat up anyone that is in trouble. Same goes for Singapore: I heard that cops in Singapore beat someone up for spitting on the street or something.

You can’t help anyone get a visa to the US—unless you marry that person, in most cases.

It’s obvious that it’s worse, overall, in many countries than it is in the US.

One reason is the strength of the dollar and the exchange rate versus other currencies.

I know people who make the Minimum Wage, share the rent with others in an apartment, and are still able to send dollars back to their families who still live in the “old country.” Those dollars go the long way in those countries.

My wife started off by doing just that. She paid off the mortgage on her house through sending money “home.” She was a babysitter for an affluent family on Long Island.

She then went to school and became a nurse.

Euro is more expensive than a dollar. And thats the other thing that they don't seem to get. They think America is like the richest country in the world, which is not true.

People also immigrate to the Euro Zone.....and to the UK, where the Pound is more “expensive” than the Euro.

The US is one of the richest countries in the world—obviously, it’s not the richest.

Exactly. And this is the answer to the OP question.

The fact that OP thought it is worse in the US is a good illustration of how people get mislead by the media.

In media's defense, I guess they probably assume that everyone knows that the rest of the world is much worse, so lets just talk about the US. And its true: educated people probably know that. But some Americans are not so educated and they don't know. So some of those lesser educated Americans are mislead into thinking they are the most racist people ever.

Americans tend to think that everything is about America -- both good and bad. So they think Americans saved the world from Hitler without realizing it was mostly Soviets that did. And they also think Americans are the most racist people, without realizing that most of the third world is a lot more racist than they are.

The Soviets certainly sacrificed more.....but the US did plenty to save the world from the Nazis.

I know "some" do. But when I was in India, they were all asking if I was American the moment they saw my white skin. They never asked if I was British and so forth.

By the way, the example of a pound is even better illustration of my point. Since Pound is twice more expensive than the dollar, why don't they go after Pound, why do they go after the dollar?

Its not even one of the richest. Since Euro is more expensive than the dollar, I would assume majority of Europe is probably richer than the US.

I guess you might say its one of the richest if you count all of Western Europe countries as one of the richest. But again, I haven't seen Indians obsess with Europe. They only obsess with the US.

The Pound is worth about $1.35. Not $2 like it was worth about 10 years ago.

This an aside to that observation, but if most Americans don't realize that is it fair to expect them to be aware of how deeply ingrained institutional racism is in their society? (Or throughout the west more broadly.)

There's a >400 year period where white supremacism was a core principle of the major powers and their empires (UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Russia, US). Growth and advancement in the West was subsidized by the theft of land, resources and labour from other parts of the world. This s**t runs deep and the impacts are widely spread. They're so widely spread that it's easy to be oblivious unless you start making it an interest because it's often downplayed in school to avoid offending certain political blocs.

It was more like “Western European supremacism” than even “White Supremacism,” even though these white folks thought themselves superior by virtue of their race.

The Russians didn’t really have all that much impact in the New World, in general. And, until the 17th century, they were dominated by the Mongols (for about 3 centuries).

"A lot"?
I haven't seen one person suggest that America isn't racist.
But I don't read every post, admittedly.

Australia has racism, but not as bad as America, by a Texan mile. 8)

I was under the impression it had more to do with genetic composition, than anything else.
I seem to recall this being said.
That some ethnic groups are more susceptible to certain illnesses, etc.
I would be happy to learn what the Truth is, here. 8)

If that's even true about covid, there could be multiple reasons for it. There are diseases and health issues that disproportionately affect white people too, such as cystic fibrosis and fentanyl deaths.

That is what I was getting at, also.
