Poor comfort for those who have to do these jobs. Retail isn't just a teenager's first job, the median age of a retail employee is actually around 40. It's hard for people to advance beyond it when they get such poor wages. Unless you want to offer education and training so that people can acquire skills and get better jobs then I think these people should be paid more and given better working conditions. I actually think we should offer both.

GOP posters here completely fail to understand that capitaliist economy is limiting the buying power of the vast majority of everyone on Earth.

You can't rationalize a wealth gap in the trillions with centuries-old platitudes.

In order for it to work, menial jobs will have to pay a LOT more. Imagine going to buy groceries, but the shelves are empty. No one wanted to stock shelves for minimum wage, so they all started collecting UBI. But now there's no food there for you to buy with your UBI money.

And if you say, "Well, people can chose to supplement their UBI by working menial jobs for extra cash," realize that even if people apply for those jobs, they'll put in zero effort, not care if they get fired, and do a lazy job.

So stockers make more than minimum wage you mean? I always assumed it was a minimum wage job.

Also who would someone apply for work if they don't want to work? If they wanted the extra cash, they would put the effort into it to not get fired.

I've worked retail, it can be tough work, there's a lot of lifting involved (in hardlines), schedules change constantly, chronic understaffing is an issue, distracting customers etc. There are certainly "lazy" people in retail jobs, but they're "lazy" because the pay sucks and they get no respect from anyone. Give the workers a voice in the workplace, pay them a living wage and they might actually be enthusiastic about stocking shelves.

To me, it's odd how people who do such hard work, get so little pay.

Near me, at a sub shop (Subway) , workers earn $9/hr , and have to mostly stand all day with COVID masks on.

Standing all day is tough.

Now wearing a COVID mask in a retail job <----- I couldn't do it.

$9/hr is still a minimum wage job, that is not even enough to live off of.

And good luck finding a retail job that actually gives you full time hours. Corporate always wants to keep payroll down, so hours get cut, so places are usually operating with the absolute bare minimum of staff. Which is one reason why you have such bad customer service.

The workers don't last long there.

It's brutal relationship low wage workers have with their employer.

The employer probably thinks these workers are a dime a dozen, and can be easily replaced if needed.

The employer probably even expects a large attrition rate.

Low pay, barely surviving, easily replaced, employer is like WTF are still doing here, likely translates to low respect for their workers ...

I live this (from the low end) and you're totally right. Feelsbadman. I work hard too (at least I used too, burned out now) and all you get for your work is more work.

Stimulus payments (in response to how the pandemic has slowing the economy) is offering further insights as to how UBI (Universal Basic Income) might evolve.

Just before the pandemic, UBI was gaining interest - esp. as technology, downsizing, etc. increasingly yields noticeable reductions in both the quantity, and quality of employment opportunities.

In the end, UBI may evolve as one check and balance to keep the economy functioning.
