Are Australian stereotypes offensive?

Victoria Bitter seems to be the main working man's brand. I wonder if they serve that here at the Outback Steakhouse. Maybe I can start my own import business built upon the "screw Fosters, here is what real aussies drink" gimmick. Maybe sell variety packs with bottles of several different brands (like how Sam Adams sells variety packs of their brand, but with one bottle each of several flavors).


Here's the "big ad" referenced under "Carlton Draught" in the article - They don't seem to make ads like it any more.

Curious advert. Reminds me of AFL, Sportsbet and other very "Australian" type adverts
Notice how homogenous the fellas in the beer ad were Brictoria :wink:

Carlton Draught seems to be the "working man's" beer in Melbourne when drinking tap beer in a pub. VB seems to be more popular at home in stubbies/cans. There's still some evidence of old breweries left, Victoria Parade in East Melb which I think has been turned into apartments. The old CUB brewery in Bouverie St Carlton was demolished in the last 15 years, I don't think the new one in Richmond has the same sort of charm. The Irish beers like Kilkenny that Cyberdad mentioned and Guiness also seem quite popular.

In Sydney Toohey's New seems to be the most popular tap beer.

Growing up in Qld XXXX draught was everywhere, but when I go back now most people are drinking the mid strength XXXX Gold. Brisbane Bitter used to also be very popular but I don't think they make it anymore.

I haven't noticed anyone drinking Fosters for at least 20 years, perhaps it's made and shipped overseas immediately!

There was a lot of XXXX advertising right up to the early 1990s, especially linked to the cricket. A famous iconic line in a XXXX advert was I couldn't give a XXXX. Became synonymous with culture of Joh Bjelke's Queensland.

I don't remember that one, perhaps I was too young and didn't take any notice.

Their version of forplay,they just use the crocs to warm up with,then it’s off to the sheep shed.

Yep, that's my regular weekend, tinnie in one hand and wrestling a croc with other while balancing in a dinghy trying to reel in a 500lb Barra :lol:

Most Australians have lost at least one child to dingos.Sometimes they leave the kids they don’t like outside at night for the dingos.If they survive the night, it’s a keeper.

If there's one thing a dingo can't stand it's a screaming child :lol:

Dingos are actually quite wary of people and settlements which is why people were really suspicious about Lindy Chamberlain's story about her daughter Azaria Chamberlain's apparent abduction by a dingo in a campsite.

In the past in the UK (not so much now though) we were given an image of Australian men which was beer swigging macho types in bars.

I visited as I have family in Oz and was surprised to find they drink from things called schooners, which looked like half pint glasses (they are slightly bigger) and seemed to, in the UK at least, fly in the face of the macho image.
