Gavin Newsom may be slimy, but our state is drawing an economic surplus and weathering this pandemic much better than most states. Larry Elder wouldn’t even make it past the primaries in a regular election. In this fiasco, he could become governor with support from less than 20% of the population. How that doesn’t freak people out is beyond me.

I still think the surplus (combined with the Biden infrastructure bill) should be used to fund a massive housing project.

This again favors conservatives who have campaigned and widely advertised their top candidates. The Democrats sit between a rock and hard place because if they advertise and support a replacement candidate they show a lack of faith in the current Democratic governor.

And that, in a nutshell, is the political play. Conservatives in California will not dispute any of it.

Why are people fleeing your state?

Remind me again, which party has had super-majority control of California for some time now?

I don’t like having a super majority; legislators need strong opposition to reign in their more ridiculous impulses.

California Democrats are dressing up their opposition to the Sept. 14 recall election of Gov. Gavin Newsom by pointing to high-minded principles, but their arguments are hard to take seriously. Progressives don't really think that the recall process is illegitimate or unconstitutional. They simply don't like that it's being used against one of their own.

I've got mixed feelings about this particular recall, mainly because, as my colleague Matt Fleming noted in his column today, the organizers blame in their "statement of reasons" illegal immigrants for the bulk of California's problems. Our state's problems entirely are the making of its U.S.-citizen politicians and the voters that have empowered them.

Nevertheless, the recall process—like the two other cornerstones of direct democracy, the initiative and referendum—is dyed into the fabric of our state. Today's progressives, who claim to stand for the power of the people against special interests and the political class, despise a process that was devised by early 1900s progressives for that explicit purpose.

Their opposition is situational, an outgrowth of their fear that the public isn't nearly as given to liberal pipedreams as they would like. Note the results from November, when the same California voters who reliably send Democrats to Sacramento rejected initiatives that would expand rent control, increase commercial property taxes, and re-impose race-based college admissions. They supported a measure that exempts drivers from a ban on independent contracting.

This special election is entirely legitimate. State law clearly spells out the rules. Recall supporters gathered the requisite signatures, submitted them for approval, and have legally placed it on the ballot. By contrast, California Democrats toyed with the schedule, as they passed a law designed to speed up the election date because they believed an earlier date would help Newsom.

As news reports note, they previously passed a law to protect Sen. Josh Newman (D–Los Angeles) from a recall in 2018 by moving the date to a more Democratic-friendly primary. Their goal in both situations was to rig the rules to benefit their candidates, so they ought not to lecture us about their, er, principled opposition to this time-tested election innovation. Their only principle is whatever helps them the most.

High cost of living. Demand has exceeded supply for decades and its past due for it to ease. Different individuals will give different specifics, but it seems pretty obvious to me.

@Dox47 We can agree to disagree on which political leanings and areas are more messed up, extreme, or toxic. All parties seem to have their bizarre moments.

I’ve been too frustrated about the whole recall situation to follow all the details, but I do think the Democrats tried to politic the date. A move that seems to be backfiring. Whatever happened to being public servants, figuring out what is best for the people? In another universe, maybe. The moments of true service to the people have always been the exception, not the rule.

Democratic Former Senate Leader Romero Endorses Larry Elder

“School choice means the money follows the child rather than the other way around,” Larry Elder, candidate for Governor in the Recall Election of Gov. Gavin Newsom explains in a campaign video. “A quality education is the first step into the middle class,” he explains.

Aligned with Elder on school choice, former California State Senate Leader Gloria Romero just announced her endorsement of Elder.

“Our public schools need big change. I’m Gloria Romero; I was the majority leader of Democrats in the state senate. I believe in charter schools and and school choice. So does Larry Elder — but not Gavin Newsom. He shut our public schools while he sent his kids to private schools,” Romero says in a new campaign video ad for Elder’s campaign team.

“Yes. I’m a Democrat. But the recall of Newsom is not about political party. It’s about Newsom. Larry Elder for governor,” Romero says.

At least he's not Gavin Newsom.

What's wrong with Newsom?

Whatever happened to being public servants, figuring out what is best for the people? In another universe, maybe. The moments of true service to the people have always been the exception, not the rule.

Look at California the answer is self evident.

Powerhouse economy on a global scale, environmentally conscious, great social safety net. So, what's the problem?
