I think you're partly right, he's likely go to yuge lengths to protect his kids.
The thing is, I believe his main motivation for doing so is fear of shame. He defends them to defend himself by association. He spoils them and protects them from failure to ensure loyalty, dependence and to protect his reputation.
If it comes down to his skin vs. their skin, he won't be like Cotton Hill and take the rap for Bobby. He'll let his kids face the music, but then complain about how unfair it was and how they're being punished because he can't be and how everyone is innocent.
He's a very self-serving lion, which from what I've heard is typical of real lions. My impression is that lions are pretty well, we can always have another one parents.

Yeah you're right, Trump probably has no loyalty not even to his kids.
Also the old guy in that video reminds me of my late grandfather.
