Same here. I get along fine with many people from other countries and other traditions.

My last year of college, I lived in an apartment complex that catered to foreign students. I only knew of one other non-foreign student in the complex. It was interesting around supper time because there were so many different aromas blended together from the cooking in the individual apartments.

I found them pretty good when I was in uni, there was one who was one who brought his motorbike over from Pakistan, a little 125 proudly displaying 6 digits of total miles. That was a fun bike.

I'm happy to believe that all government parties actually love immigration because it serves as a handy distraction for what the real issues are

^I think it's more practical than that. Economic growth is a pyramid scheme. In order for people to keep getting richer you need more and more people at the bottom working and consuming.

In the UK, as elsewhere in the Western world, we have people living longer, having fewer children and having them later in life.

The resulting shortfall in low-income, high productivity demographics is being filled by immigrants.

That's why governments, Labour or Tory, can't just close the gates.

It's why some people argue for circular or donut economics instead of this unsustainable push for growth all the time.

It's clearly the governments who encourage people to come here no matter whether it's tourism or immigration yet some politicians seem to revel in using negative language thus encouraging hatred from certain groups and those groups are unfortunately growing

This confuses and frustrated me because I do believe there are quite a lot of people out there who are being labelled as racist but in fact they are only following on from what certain politicians are preaching on about....not everyone is capable of independent thought and also (and I know it's hard to understand) some people don't know their views are racist or even right wing...I just feel so sad for society ATM with the way it's going

Don't underestimate the role the newspapers have played in getting us here. The Daily Mail and Express have been drip-feeding anti-immigrant poison into their readers ears for at least 30 years.

I tend to see politicians as capitalising on public opinion rather than leading it.

Someone like Farage or Trump I see as a symptom of the problem rather than the cause.

Some of the same arguments against immigrants have been made against African Americans - historically and into the present. It’s just very sad to me. It’s like we never learn. It would be nice if this topic could be appropriately taught in schools, but that’s unlikely to happen any time soon in the US since the sizable racist population, including politicians, lose their s**t over this topic.

Far too many accusations were being thrown about here with some of them extremely personal and apparently intended to hurt.

IOW: don't be surprised and kick off with complaints when they are.


Any further extensions of the previous arguing and attacks will be removed.

If it was really about "border security", then:

1. Why do people only talk about the Mexican border? Nobody talks about securing the Canadian border, airports, or seaports.

2. Why do they think there is nothing between mass deportations and what the MAGAs call "open borders"? Couldn't things like better screening processes do the trick?

Border security is one of the top 3 election issues across the western world. In Australia immigration and illegals also comes up every election. But for us its people coming by boat. Refugees here are called "boat people". But the Australian public miss the biggest source of illegals who come by plane and overstay their visa.

And yes, its connected to racism, but also job security, over population, quality of life and other things.

I haven't got a problem with people of different race coming to the UK. It's the numbers I'm bothered about. 900,000 net immigration is not sustainable for society, housing and the NHS.

Immigration numbers are impossible to debate now without being conflated with race.
