how many think not being PC is racist/sexist?
You missed my point. My point was that people should remember the past, and learn from it, but not carry something over 300 yrs later or whatever. That's living in the past forever, it's not getting past the problem.
I'd say BET teaches them that theyr only good enough to be rappers, basketball players, or drug dealers. BET is ran by the rich corporate white men who are keeping them down, through propaganda aimed at them. And many are following it. BET puts out a negative image for them.
I'm not even responsible for what BET does though, I have no control over that. So just because I am white does not make it ok to blame all that on me either. Not all white people are theyr enemies, remember it can go either way. Blacks can be racist against whites too. And people of any color can be racist against people of any other color, or sometimes even the same color (uncle tom's). It's not such a black and white issue (no pun intended).
Really though in a way I kinda see that as problematic. it encourages division, really we're all just Americans, period... Hell even nations are false though. Beyond anything, we're all human. But at this stage nationhood is a means of group survival, we shouldn't be dividing ourselves so much. All of us living in the US are **Americans**.
I mean race should be acknowledged, but not seen. What I mean by this is, it shouldn't be a factor. One can be proud of what their people have done, without having to have it brought into every aspect of their individual life. We should teach about different cultures, but rather than just teaching their differences, we should also teach about our similarities, and teach how we're ultimately one **human** race. Ultimately, we all have the same wants, needs, and desires in life, at the basic level we're all the same creature.
Women's history should also be taught along a similar line..... but then too I think some strains of feminism go way overboard too. A woman can be proud to be a woman without hating men or denying an equal point of perspective from men.
I can see what you are talking about, snake, But I also think it's important to have a black history month in america.
Why? Poeple so many people are ready and willing to believe the worst about black people. So many.
Have any of you heard the campaign of black people (speaking to everyone) saying "Black history is American History" etc? It is supposed to let everyone know that the history of blacks in America wasn't just slavery and the civil rights movement. It supposed to let all the ignorant people know that blacks have contributed to society, and aren't just a detriment or leech to the system, as some people are led to believe. It's supposed to let that kid with no black friends know that black people are just like him. Black history is your history, regardless of your color, because we are all people, arent we?
People are using terms in this thread like "wh***y" that havent been used for decades. It strikes me as silly and overly defensive for some of the posters to use those unwarranted terms. It's like you are automatically assuming blacks hate you and think of you as an enemy. This isnt the case. You shouldnt view black histroy month as devisive, or think all blacks see you as racist or as wh***y or the man, that shows a lack of understanding. There's more than surface level superficialities here.
Yes, some black people area little wary of white people, as they assume they will not like them because of the color of their skin. You should realize that this doesn't mean they dont like you. In fact, they just as readily may be willing to accept you as a brother/friend.
I dont know anyone of my minority friends who would have a problem with a european history month or a european club, etc. I really hate when this point is brought up, because the answer is just too obvious that I can't understand why people cant see that the reason why people are only WARY of such things is because in the past it meant promoting a "we're better than this animalistic, violent, ugly race" attitude. If you dont believe me, look into the different medias/communications from the past. The difference in BHM is that people say "We're proud of our ancestors and what they have done, and we are all part of the same human race. We are all equal." BHM's main message is to bridge us all together; I've known Euro clubs that welcomed everyone and really emphasized pride, and I think it's a beautiful thing and will be appreciated as long as it doesn't turn into a Nazi rally.
Also, I jsut wanted to clear it up that slavery really wasn't that long ago. It ended in the 1860s, but of course, coming out of slavery left many dirt poor, and as we all know, poverty can be generational. It wasn't that long ago as it was only my mother's grandmother's parents who were born into slavery. Not to mention blacks were only given equal rights under the law in the 1950s-60s, when my mother was in college. I just wanted to point out that this wasnt a millenia ago. That being said, yes people do need to look forward.

I agree with much of what you wrote merr. "wh***y" might not be used much these days, "white boy" and "cracker" are used a bit more than wh***y. But whites can just as easily be victims of racism..... White people are honestly some of the biggest trend whores on the planet, and much of the PC crowd exhibits whites who feel guilty about things they can't control, and who become (either consciously or sub-consciously) racist against themselves.
Slavery has left many blacks unemployed after the civil wars and segregations.... When blacks began becoming more prosperous, they (white establishment) introduced crack into black neighborhoods to keep them down. This was wrong, but still some responsibility lies upon the individual to make the right decision not to use those drugs.
Names like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, they do not really represent their people, they represent their pockets. If racism stopped, their careers would stop. They get paid to "fight racism", even if that means stirring the pot to invent racism, or over-exagerate a situation to support a claim of racism. So they have no interest in stopping racism, it's really a big lie on their part. If anything, theyr also racist against white people.
Bill Cosby on the other hand is a great idea of a black leader. He's well spoken, he's not racist, he's very professional, he's not out to stir the pot and feed his pockets, and he is very real about things. I would have rather Cosby answered the outcry for blacks in the GINA 6 trials than Al Sharpton. I think he'd have a more positive impact.
Some leftie blacks might claim Cosby is "too white", but really I kinda see that as being racist against both whites and against themselves as blacks. Most of those ney-sayers buy into this BET culture which tells them if a black man gets a successful job, speaks proper english, and has an IQ, theyr a "sell out", and that's why I say it's also racist against themselves. I mean, what is acting black or acting white? We're all individual human beings, I'm not every white person but I am me, just like you merr are not every black person, your you, a unique individual.
I say, no matter what color you are, if you've got the will, you've got the potential to do something meaningful with your life. One thing I've learned as an aspie, never let anyone tell you that you can't do something. If you want to be a nuclear physicist, then you can be a nuclear physicist. If you wanna be an environmental engineer, you can be an environmental engineer.
There may be a glass ceiling for certain peoples, aspies are in that category as well, but above anything, do not let people tell you you can't. Work hard, and prove them wrong, make ney-sayers eat their words.
I took Black history in school. It was very interesting. Sure it's part of American history but there's a lot of history in American history. It all can't be told in American history unless it was a very very long class.

yup, then there's people like the "dalits" of India who have been trampled, raped and enslaved for 3000 years and when some of them manage to come over here to escape you never hear them say a word (well not when compared to blacks anyway), i think black people and white racists accidentally teamed up to create a black culture of self pity.
and lets face it when was the last time you turned on your tv to a music channel and didnt see a multi millionaire black guy bragging about how much cash he makes selling rap cd's. im not saying black people don't face alot of racial prejudisim, they do, but just because they do is no reason to exaggerate about it.

It's not. I think that this PC crap itself is, ironically, discriminatory in both ways. It makes minorities "special attention groups", whilst claiming that the special interests of these groups must be protected, and anything that might offend them should be covered up. It destroys any part of culture and covers up any history which might be offensive, counter to everyone's interest. All too often it is white PC liberals who don't identify with their own cultural history or race, and claim that European-ethnic people are always the ones in the wrong. I wish all this guilt-mongering would stop. I'm sick and tired of my own racial and cultural history being oppressed by PC nazis and guilt-preachers. I dare say that to some extent, Political Correctness is counter-productive in the first place. It even INCREASES racial tensions. ethnic minorities, homosexuals, and women, fought for equality, and they have it in law. There will always be some sort of difference, which must be respected.
And political correctness is spoiling it! An outcry over immigrants being deported, people screaming about racial jokes... which are all in good jest and NOT malicious, Christian archbishops claiming that we will integrate religious laws into our own legal system, Christmas being changed to "winter fest", etc. It's the fault of the PC brigade that alot of these tensions remain.
Respect British history and stand to protect our culture, and respect other cultures! People can be proud of all of the parts of British culture which have interweaved over history, whilst remaining British and not forcing any alien culture prematurely, in such a way that it is a horrible abortion of artificial cultural adjustment!

Snake- I know that whites can be the victims of racism. If I hear someone using terms like "white boy" etc, it makes me cringe. I know that it perpetuates more racism/separation, and it's something I dont stand for, if I can help it.But that being said, there will always be racism on either side that we cannot stop. It's irritating, but there's not much we can do besides be an example.
I dont feel like anyone should feel guilty for the past anymore. It's not something we can change, but it's not something that we can cover up either. Many people may "scream" racism here and there, but that does not make them racist. I'd say that many blacks are hypersensitive to racism because, well, look at our history in the USA. It pretty much is all built from the fact that we are darker etc. If history was built on another factor, one that is more introspective, more individualistic, it would be different. For example, if kids in school only learn about slavery and the civil rights, it seems that the only history of the black man in America was one of dealing with racism in one way or another. So, if history is only looked at in one way, people are only going to see themselves as victims, or white people are only going to feel guilt. I think that is why BHM is important- it relieves any feelings of hopelessness through the past or "self pity," and any guilt for others.
Let me tell you that the majority of educated blacks laugh at people like Al Sharpton and Jackson. The most common saying is "Sharpton does NOT represent ME." He is very arrogant for thinking he does. One thing I know about him is he is an old guy and possibly pretty isolated in communities where there are few whites. He was a young man during segregation so he probably has not seen what you and I have seen. He hasn't gone to college with a plethora of different people, he hasn't played on sports teams with others, he hasnt gone to relaxed parties where people just relax and have fun together- so he probably does not realize how much things have changed since the 50s. I dont think this excuses his behavior, but it does make him seem like an out-of-touch crazy man, doesn't it?
Exactly, and I totally agree with you there. When I was attacking sharpton and jackson, I wasn't coming down on all black people. My best friend is black, I don't even see color there, I see a human being, no different than me. He's black and NT, I am a white aspie, but in a way, I can relate in that respect to being a minority because of my AS.
If anything, we need to stop dividing ourselves by such things as race, because the elites at the top want us all to be their slaves in this coming police state. This is where either the working class comes together, as one people, to defend our liberties, or we all fall to slavery. We're in this together now.
If anything, we should reduce racism because it is the right thing to do. Humanizing - Good; Dehumanizing - Bad. We don't need a fear of dictatorship to oppose it.

I agree, totally, but that should add urgency. Though I'm wise enough to know people probably won't really put their differences aside, that goes beyond just race too. It also includes religion, gender, nationality, a buttload of other things.
Yeah, it's a hard fact to ealize people will find some way to discriminate or judge others in some form or another. If it's not race, it's calss. If it's not class, it's religion. If it's not religion, it's nationaity. If it's not nationality, it's (perceived) beauty.
But it's not sometihng we should dwell on too much. You dwell on these things and you feel your life and personality fall into a pit of depression.
