How is spanking a child different from the torture policies of some governments? One country I know of allows vigorous, painful methods as long as it does not cause major permanent physical damage, but fear and pain to compel compliance are considered OK.

The fact that we don't give a rats ass about the people being tortured but we do about our kids. If things were vice versa then, well, things would indeed be different. I think I shall find a way to have kids in preparation for that day.

there are too many people that were spanked as kids and not enough of them are truly emotionally harmed now, as far as I can tell.

No they should not make spanking illegal. Not only would that be completely stupid, it would set a bad precedent regarding the legality of punishing kids.

They used to flog soldiers as a means of keeping up morale and discipline. Now, they've stopped doing that, at least in a lot of countries. Maybe they still do it in Saudi Arabia.

Public schools used to flog children, but a lot of states have banned the practice. If you want your child to be flogged in school, then you pretty much have to send him to a religious school in most states.

I got the strap at school quite a bit. It didn't stop me mucking up, just made me cleverer about not being caught. :D

Well, I'm sure that you deserved it.

Maybe the cat-'o-nine-tails would have been a more effective deterrent?

Most of the time I deserved it - occasionally I didn't, but it probably made up for the times when I did.

Do you feel that you are a better person as a result of the floggings? Or did they have no effect?

More because of the threat than the actual floggings.

A threat is no good unless it's carried out.

In my first year of high school, some senior kids were running on the cricket pitch (which wasn't allowed).

The Vice Principal lined the entire of Year 12 up on the oval and went up and down the line giving them six of the best.

We all watched open mouthed in shock.

From year 5 all the way up to year 12 - we always respected the oval from then on.

Did it go something like this?

Tad too violent for here, sorry. I didn't even know that sort of thing would be allowed on youtube.

Discipline means to "teach" not to punish.

Jesus' Disciples were Teachers, they didn't go around flogging people (unless Bible-Bashing counts).

Flogging does work for some children - but only some..
Excessive flogging reduces the usefulness of flogging.
- I'd suggest that people heavily in favour of flogging rent the DVD called Evil (I think it's Swedish).

Yelling does almost nothing.

Telling kids to "Fix the Problem you Created" works quite well.

Also - trying to understand their point of view sometimes works.

I wish schools were given a bit more power to deal with students though (and in positive ways) - A position like "an intervention officer" would be welcome.

Interesting article on birching

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birching

It does seem like a British thing.

Here is one on flagellation:

Agreed.

There was a time when I was considering a career in education, but I definitely couldn't listen to these snot-nosed 8 year olds who've learned from their parents that they can get away with telling their authority figures to F off.

You say the F word, you get your ass busted. I don't care if you say it to your friends or not, but you don't talk like that to your elders and betters.

Schools would do well to have something documented that lists the appropriate punishments for various things so that kids and parents could see that rules were being followed.

eg: It would be very good if there was a rule against bullying with a documented punishment to fit the crime.

It doesn't have to be physical or violent - it could be that the bully has to perform x hours of services to the school (eg: picking up papers).

I like that idea, about having set punishments that fit the crime. I think that many teachers today are in a bad position because there are so many parents who throw a fit if their kid gets in trouble for anything. I don't know if that would solve it, but it seems like a good idea.
