Calenders are arbitrary in terms of the year number. Even if you have an absolute starting date (like Ussher or Julian), it means little or nothing metaphysically.
I see your point but I disagree. It's the not the date itself, but the astrological meaning of that date that matters. It's the precession of the equinoxes from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius (the water bearer). Strangely enough that supposed dude Jesus says when he leaves us to look for a man bearing a pitcher of water. (There are many other strange things in that book, hell just go to

It's the end of the last baktun of the Mayan(or Aztec? can't remember) Calendar, which signifies the end of a 25,000ish year cycle, and obviously the beginning of a new cycle.
Also, metaphysically as you said, the sheer fact that not only has most of the world known the time this was to happen, but 90% of us on Earth today know this date, and that the majority of us on Earth that know this date think something significant will happen around then, will in and of itself cause something to happen - independantly of solar\galactic energies that may or may not exist. The collective thoughts, however personified in our society (as collective consciousness, trends, etc), will cause something to happen. Just what that is, I am not certain.
I have a simple opinion. If a great and righteous person emerges to lead us into a changed world at that time, religion will be proven, independant of the idea of God. If world war or domination happens then, conspiracy theorists are right and it's all about the mind control. If nothing happens, then the human race will find something else to look forward to in this depressing materialistic world bereft of the values and great men of the days of old.
