And then all you have to do is forge a statement with the proper wording for any murder you commit to turn out to have been an "assisted suicide"! Imagine the lucrative possibilities!

so your complaint is that it could be used for non-voluntary purposes.

....don't you think that there'd be a lot of evidence in the case of non-voluntary?

how about in cases where the person is terminally ill?

but that didn't happen, dogbrain. Assisted suicide is legal in my State for 8 years. No one has done that. there have been 246 people that have availed themselves of the law since then. All the documentation of when they met the . . well, here is the link. I posted it before, but no one seems to have read it.

Suicide... one of the only things in our legal system where it's illegal if you fail. I don't advocate it, fear it, but don't find purpose or function in legislating it.

Assisted suicide? I think it's one of the sicker hypocrisies in this country. We put our pets to sleep in an act of mercy, but we would not pay the same kindness to our human loved ones? Absolutely it should be legal. We should have the right to do with our lives what we please. If ending it is our plan, we should be able to carry through. If we need assistance in that aim, why should it be denied? It is cruel to force people to live in pain.

I don't mind the idea of assisted suicide as long as its simply to avoid a long painful death that's going to happen anyways. However depression driven suicides should not be penalized, except perhaps to require someone who attempts suicide to be evaluated by a licensed psychotherapist. After all the last thing we need is to give someone a reason to regret failing the attempt...

Suicides for financial gain of family/friends however, must be discouraged. Of course the only way to stop this is to ensure the the best way to get your family out of debt is to kill yourself. The only effective way to prevent this is to simply not cover suicide in Life Insurance polices (since they are private contracts they can be made to cover or not cover anything, a policy could be written to specifically exclude death by gunshot from an authentic civil-war era musket).

That makes sense, although I think some could argue that human life is more important than your pet's life, however, there seem to be the irony, the reason is for ending their suffering, while the very some reason not being well accepted in the case of humans.

so if it's more important and they're requesting assisted suicide, shouldn't that human have the dignity to be able to get their request?

or do you mean that humans have to be forced to stay alive longer than they desire to because the world is full of religious a**holes who think they can legislate life to be holy.

Suicide is an unforgivable sin, because after dying you cannot confess that sin and be forgiven and saved.

I can't believe I just said that :P

I actually support assisted suicide for ending suffering and pain, when nothing else can be done, and yes if it is an act of mercy to do on animals, on humans should be the same, a merciful act.

We need to differentiate between Euthansia on medical grounds and Suicide

Euthanasia should absolutely be legal.

Regards to suicide, I think the question should be - Is it criminal neglect on the part of governments that so little resources are put into mental care. Suicide destroys families, governments should be held responsible for the disgracefull lack of care. Of course bullets and bombs are more important than the well being of the society

The person committing suicide will need to give written AND verbal permission. So even if someone forges a statement, the person can simply opt out at any time by basically saying they no longer want to die, even at the moment they are about to be put to sleep. So in fact no one would be murdered this way.

Yeah, these double standards do need to be gotten rid of.

I find this topic interesting. My opinion is that everybody should be their own boss over their own body.
I do not accept nor agree with the law as it exists in this capitalist/imeprialist society, the law is to control people and is forced upon people. If I accept the law or not or with what/how I disagree is not the issue, but it makes me think about if I want to be suicide become legal, because that is thinking of a solution within the law which I disagree to begin with. I also like to point out here that I am against the death penalty (which luckely doesn't excist in my country).
I just think people should be boss over their own body.
I also know that people who are suicidal and really want to put an end to their lives it is unavoidable, you can't prevent it. I say this from my experiences with some young people. When you are successful to put an end to your life, then it doesn't matter if it is legal or not.
It is a problem when you are ill (mentally and/or physically) and your suffering is unbarable and you need help with ending your life. The helper has a problem with the law if he/she decides to give you a hand in stopping the suffering and might risk imprisonment
The other problem is when you failed to end your own life. You have commited a crime then. What happens next? Most likely put away in a clinic against their will, I guess.
The other thing I like to point out is I know there are people who had a suicide attempt and could not rember anything about it, absolutely nothing, a complete blanc. No reason, not a why and how, no memory. It sounds all very weird and unbelieveable I know, but it does happen. I have seen it with somebody who had a head/brain injury. What to do with this?
I do agree that the law has contradictions and is full with hypocracy.
The thought that we can end our dear beloved pet suffering, but we have to let our dear beloved friend/family member continue unnessesary suffering even if that person wants an end it too is just absurd.

Hahahaha. Your life is your own, you can do whatever you like with it. What are you going to do, put someone on trial for suicide? Execute people who attempt suicide? Haha. No, suicidal people need help. They are either going through rough times, and/or are mentally ill.

Assisted suicide... depends. If someone is in severe physical pain and has no realistic chance of living a good life if their illness ever subsides, then let them die in dignity. Mental pain, on the other hand, is no excuse.

I never understood how suicide can possibly be against the law because surely you are outside of the influence of law the moment you commit it?

Euthanasia is a prickly topic though.

Skillshine, people with bipolar disorder are at a Very high risk of comitting suicide, particularly during a depressive episode. Suicide is very much an impulsive act in most cases and often times when people feel suicidal their judgement is impaired; so the illegality of suicide clearly is Not an incentive for people with suicidal thoughts to Stop and think. IIRC, people who are suicidal can often be saved by having a crisis counselor to talk them through it.
Did your brother take medication for his bipolarity? If he did I wonder if he stopped taking it. A good friend of mine who's bipolar was in trouble with the law and had to go back to the slammer for a month because he violated the terms of his parole by getting high cuz he felt suicidal.[/quote]

Hi :

Actually my Brother did take medication and it was discovered during his autopsy that he had not been taking his medication. The suicide rate is very high for individuals with Bipolar and I guess that would be the greatest lesson any family member can learn. No matter how well your loved one seems to be doing at the time, new stressors can trigger a devestating outcome. Because my Brother had many years of , I'll call it "good functioning" we all seemed to let our guards down and believe that his prior suicidal tendencies would not resurface.

Jenny
