Jesus' Sermon on the Mount? Love thy neighbour as you love yourself? If you love God but hate your fellow man, you're a hypocrite.

I know, the issue is that all Christians fail to live by the Christian ideal, so hypocrisy does not prevent Christianity, only perfect Christianity, and the latter was only found in Christ anyway. The issue is whether misanthropy would prevent a belief in Christ as the savior of men, and an *attempt* at following God's law.

Misanthropy is not conducive to Christianity. If I hated people in general, I'd be too angry, bitter, and unhappy to have Jesus Christ in my life.

Um.... I think everyone has argued that there is a lot of tension between the 2, however, I would not base any notion of this purely upon what one person thinks. The issue is that we have already pointed to Calvinism as a theological tradition as allowing for more misanthropy. Calvinism holds to a doctrine of total depravity, and it is highly centered upon God rather than man. Several members have already suggested that a Calvinist misanthrope might be possible.

In my experience, a lot of the most devout Christ-gobblers have been losers all their life and need to find someone to love them, even if he died hundreds of years ago.

Yes, God IS a liar! Deut. 30:11 Clearly He had no idea what He was talking about. *snicker* *snicker*

Christianity and Misanthropy

My dad would have fit the label. All he talked about was God, all he read/studied was about God, but he didn't want to go "save" people or help people, he didn't like people and he didn't like himself, he loathed humanity and thought God probably hated him. He didn't put any stock in his or our(His kids) futures. He looked forward to earth burning, the second time God will destroy the earth(first time with water, second time with fire). He was a fundamentalist Baptist. I'm strongly against such a negative outlook, it does no one any good.

Spoken like a true misanthrope. But I don't blame you. In fact, I'm beginning to understand you.

Really though, my dislike of people in general isn't based on my faith, and I recognize that in many ways it runs counter to the Christian faith. But, needless to say, I'm not a perfect Christian, and arguably not even a halfway-decent one.

So yes, it is possible to be both a Christian and a misanthrope (even if this does imply a certain level of internal contradiction in worldview) for the simple reason that no Christian is able to fully live up to the ideal.

What Calvinists dislike about humans are their "carnal desires"-well specifically sexuality and pleasure. Otherwise they still think of humans as having the capacity for good if they work hard to pretend like they're disembodies souls.....
I also view Calvinist protestantism, and its modern day successor-Christian Fundamentalism-as an attempt to return christianity to its patriarchal roots. The virgin mary plays NO role in fundamentalist protestantism and the worship of Mary and Saints is considered to be idolatry in the eyes of most fundies.

So you're saying you have a messianic complex? Using adjectives normally attached to yourself and applying them to God would seem to indicate so... :P

No, I'm saying I'm a troll

'sucks' is a verb; 'butthole' is a noun, btw

Oh right, you mean Man's ideal. Sorry. :P Humans... always expecting so much more than even God does. Sheesh

Sure.

Hardcore Calvinists are very misanthropic ("Sinners In The Hands of An Angry God"). The Westboro Baptist Church is probably the most misanthropic group of people I can think of.

When the two biggest threats to a religious group's existence are Haldol and Lithium you know it has some steep inherent problems.
