Well, China has nukes, China has missiles, China has nukes on missiles. Most of their missiles are pointed at us (save those pointed at Russia...;) So no invasion, no war, or Los Angeles and Washington are glowing craters. Never gonna happen, or could happen, at least until we both run out of Petroleum, Oil, and lubricants.

The Depression was a bit more complicated than let on. First, the practice of buying on margin (buy a dollar stock for 10 cents, and pay it off while the stock market just goes up and up) sounds eerily similar.

Second, the government practiced a lassaiz faire (more like Adam Smiths' invisible hand...;) for 4 years, hoping the private banks, etc., would just pull us out of it (also very similar).

Third, the Smoot-Hawley tarriff made world trade with outside governments prohibitively expensive, and when countered by an extremely large trade war retaliation, caused what few remaining jobs to go south.

Actually, we're not very protectionist; all the factory jobs went to China, the IT jobs to India, and all the call centers (that didn't go to India) went to the Caribbean, which also sorts coupons, etc. The only major export we have is jobs.

Oh, I know it is never going to happen. The USA would never go to war with China. Especially with Clinton as Sec. of State. She wants human rights to take a back seat to economic progress, so she is on the same page as China on that issue.

I don't see a giant creator in place of LA as an incentive not to go to war with China. I think it would be a good idea to wipe the slate clean on the coasts and start over.

Can we count on IdahoAspie to fight front and center with rifle in hand in any war?

actually, I recently read a book on the Chinese experience in WWII. The Nationalists lost because they were corrupt, unorganized, and the leadership didn't really care that much about the war. They didn't feed, arm, clothe, or give much medical attention to their soldiers. Disease and starvation generated by their own leaders killed more people than the Japanese ever did.

The Communists were organized, learned from their mistakes, and actually tried to get the common people on their side.

I don't see why they'd need to start a war; they have all our manufacturing base, and all our money. All they'd have to do is call in all their loans at once.

Well they haven't got long to spend it even if they did, fact is the money based system is over. In 2012 the Sun, Earth and dark centre of the solar system line up exactly, happens every 26k years. Result? The poles of the Earth reverse, the mantle of the Earth shifts, huge changes. The Mayan calander, Hopi prophecies, I Ching, Notradamus, book of Revelations can't all be wrong. It's not the first time it's happened either.

This reminds me of 1999 when lots of people went bonkers thinking the end of the world would happen in 2000.

The earth doesn't know what are calender is, and thus does't make appointments with it. The end of the world will happen when it happens, if it happens when we are still here.

My guess, I will die long before the end of the world gets here.

There were troops in both Hiroshima and Nagaski. By the way the Japs bombed Chinese civilians and killed thousands of them in 1932.

And what is special about nukes, besides residual radioactivity. In March of 1945 Tokyo was fire-bombed and 125,000 people were killed in one night. Over twice the number killed in Nagasaki.

You seem to forget that the Japs started a war with us on 12/7/1941 and we just finished it in Augus of 1945.

Right. So stupid that we saved the lives of at least a half million of our own people by finally getting Hirohito's attention. In a war, one does whatever it takes to win it, especially a war of self defense. the Japs attacked us first.

I bet 100 000 dollars that it doesn't happen. No, make that Euro, the dollar should be devaluated by 2012. :D

I'll bet that much in gold that it doesn't happen (Paper money won't have any value if Pixel8 is correct).

It's pretty important. Radiation poisoning, mutations, several generations down, given the survivors can reproduce, irradiated land, the list goes on.

Does it make more since to drop a nuke or two on two cities to whip out 200,000 people, or does it make more since to kill 500,000 to 2,000,000 in a conventionial war?

You have to realize, that in 1946, we were not aware of the effects of radiation.

It ended the war, saved us from another massive invasion in a 10 year bloody war, and made Japan a peaceful nation there after.

Nukes are suppose to scare you, make you vomit, and turn in disgust. That is what has kept us everyone from using them since.

Nobody else used Nukes in 1946, not because of a moral imperative, but because they didn't have any. Britain and Russia would have used nukes if they had them first. No doubt.
