Thank you for at least giving a tentative definition. That's the kind of thing I like to see.

It must be admitted, however, that Christianity might eventually be replaced by a more compassionate system of ethics.

oh, I am not a Christian, I just thought that was what a sin was. missing the mark, not getting it right, that sort of thing.

Wikipedia defines sin as 'any thought or act that is immoral, harmful, shameful, or alienating.' That leaves open many possibilities for prohibited actions.

Who knows? Being ugly could be a sin! Way to go, Christianity! You pissed people off!

and WP considers trolling a sin and WP defines trolling as:

troll
Posting derogatory messages about sensitive subjects on newsgroups and chat rooms to bait users into responding.

Have you ever heard it being used in that way though?

Sin often means transgressing the commandments of God (or the gods) or getting God (or the gods) ticked off.

The more abstract use of the term pertains to transgressing a moral order with no particular reference to deities. For example, a crime against nature. Which by the way is impossible since there is not a scintilla, not a dight, not an iota, not a whiff of morality in the natural laws of physical being.

I had more meant to ask whether MikeH106 had any examples of Christanity consideration ugliness as a sin. Sorry for not indicating that.

Sin is still vaguely-defined. It could be a tool of oppression against the less attractive.

Sinsboldly, I don't intend to make anyone angry here. One of my primary purposes in this debate is to defend the less attractive, not ridicule them. I wear my anti-Happy-Bunny avatar to show people this. If at any point I offended you or anyone else, I apologize.

Orwell: Same for you. In case you were thinking of teaming up on me with Sinsboldly, she was wrong. If you agreed with her, you'd both be wrong.

I've had two other individuals cry/be near tears recently during an argument/debate thread. I was mystified by both of them, and I'm mystified by this one too.

I can't see anything wrong or offensive in my debating tactics, but if there is, let me know.

Quote:
A 'wrong action'? That doesn't do us much good.

Why not?

Quote:
Jesus tells you, "Do not sin." What is sinning? How do you tell when someone sins?

"All wrongdoing is sin, ..."
"Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness."
"Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light and there is nothing in him to make him stumble."
(Some excerpts from 1 John)

If you're looking for a definite, all-inclusive list of sins, there isn't one. That's because there are an infinite number of possible actions, so it's not possible to compile a definitive list of all sins. But there are plenty of partial lists. The 10 commandments lists several, and the Catholics have their list of 7 deadly sins, for example. You can figure out, with reasonable certainty, whether an action is a sin or not, so this isn't a practical problem.

In fact, you can find definite criteria to judge infinitely many possible objects of thought, as in using Eratosthenes' Sieve to determine whether any given number is prime.

This has pretty much been the point I've been trying to make with you.

Ethics is naturally less precise than mathematics, but all actions can be judged by simple criteria to determine if they are good or not.

I wasn't teaming up with anyone against anyone. Sinsboldly and I have not always gotten along like clams, but in this case I don't see what in particular she said that was horribly wrong.

Horribly wrong? No. It was a forgivable misunderstanding.

I'm just very used to being teamed up on.

I have wondered why the red international NO sign around the happy bunny was your avatar. We have happy bunnies as avatars on this forum, we have sig. lines that mention happy bunnies. When you showed up with a NO sign around a happy bunny, it became rather controversial to those happy happy bunnies we already had here and we . I don't see how being confrontational to happy bunnies shows you are defending anything, perhaps you can explain that a little clearer, please?

thank you,

Merle
