While I agree that there are legitimate uses for the word "ret*d", as an insult, I think it has to go. Why do we have to put down people of lower intelligence anyway? I know we all say "stupid" but why is it that lack of intelligence equals fair game for ridicule?

I will tell you what the word "ret*d" means to me and then you can decide whether I am being politically correct, too sensitive, an a-hole or whatever.

What the word "ret*d" means. I have been called that plenty of times throughout my life. What it means is that ret*ds are not people. They are not human. ret*ds look and act different. You don't want to be around them--ever. Unless you want to be one too. ret*ds have no rights, they can be treated any way you feel like treating them. In fact, ret*ds are to be treated with contempt. ret*ds are even lower than n****rs. It's ok to call them up and harass them. It's ok to bully them and treat them meanly. Of course, if you want to be moral, you can just ignore them, rather than actively persecute them. But on no account make friends with them or defend them. I have worked very hard to overcome ret*d, and I do not wish to be reclassified as one. I am like a very light skinned black person who is now successfully passing for white. I do not know my black relatives. I am White. I am Accepted. I cannot be around anyone from my former life.

A ret*d is anyone society says is a ret*d. Don't dress right? You're a ret*d. Don't speak right? You're a ret*d. I have a sister who is a Ph.D. She also has a physical handicap. She is a ret*d. She will always be a ret*d. She is not my sister. I can't associate with her. I can't love her. I can only look upon her with contempt and not see her for the wonderful person she is. That is what the word ret*d has done in my family.

Oh, but it is just a word . . .
